Hi Everyone, After the experience with my Ubuntu Dom0 locking up with Xen, I wish to try an OS that supports Xen officially. Can anyone recomend a really good OS for Xen? (Other than CentOS please). One that is rock solid as this will eventually be used in a hosting environment Thanks _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
XCP or XenServer? XenServer is out of the question as it is non-free and isn''t allowed to be used for hosting (But it is very good though!) XCP, which seems very good, I don''t believe it supports my RAID card (PERC H200). The kernel in it is too old ________________________________ From: David Markey [mailto:admin@dmarkey.com] Sent: Tue 15/06/2010 10:11 To: Jonathan Tripathy Cc: Xen-users@lists.xensource.com Subject: Re: [Xen-users] Supported Distros XCP or XenServer? Are you sure XCP doesnt support your raid card? You can compile your own kernel modules into the kernel. AFAIK no other distro has that. It also makes it easy for virtualization control panels (like HyperVM SLE/Opensuse can be a good candidate, has newer Xen version, and seems to be actively maintained. Others have also use Debian, with the catch that i386 seems to be buggier while amd64 seems stable (see list archive). -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

The stock build of Xen with CentOS doesn''t support FreeBSD properly, this is the only reason why I don''t use that. Which version comes with Opensuse out-of-the-box? If you only have problems with FreeBSD, I actually suggest you start with Centos + Xen 3.4.2 from http://www.gitco.de/repo/ I had some issues with opensolaris domU and stock RH/Centos xen, and it works fine using updated Xen version. Perhaps it''s the same thing for FreeBSD. This approach (only update Xen) has the advantage that you still get Redhat''s kernel bugfixes on their rock-stable kernel-xen. -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

You need to download http://www.gitco.de/repo/GITCO-XEN3.4.2_x86_64.repo (for 3.4.2), put it on /etc/yum.repos.d, and simply run "yum install xen" (or simply "yum update", if you have the time and network speed to update all other packages as well). It should configure your system to use new version of Xen while still using old kernel. Look at /boot/grub/menu.lst before and after yum update to see the difference. -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

I''ll give that a shot later this evening and let you know how it goes. I use 64bit all the time by the way, to make use of the extra RAM. I think I''ve tried the above in the past, but followed this guide: http://www.syntaxtechnology.com/2010/01/upgrade-xen-3-0-on-centos-5-4-x86_64-to-xen-3-4-2/ but it replaced the kernel... What is the best way to make sure that the same kernel is used? Just run yum update xen? Just run yum > update xen?Well, yeah. BTW, the tutorial on that page is also correct. Somewhat. It uninstalls and reinstalls a whole group, thus (possibly) requiring you to add/edit grub.conf manually. Last time I check, when "kernel-xen" is already installed, running "yum install xen", "yum update xen", or simply "yum update" while having Gitco repo enabled will install updated xen from Gitco which automatically edit existing grub.conf entry to use newer xen hypervisor. The magic is in rpm postscript doing something like this for XENKVER in $(/bin/grep el5xen /boot/grub/menu.lst | /bin/grep vmlinuz | /bin/sed ''s/.*\/vmlinuz-\(.*el5xen\).*/\1/''); do /sbin/new-kernel-pkg --package kernel-xen --mkinitrd --depmod --install --multiboot=/boot/xen.gz-4.0.0 $XENKVER || exit $? done Again, I recommend you keep a copy of old and new /boot/grub/menu.lst to see the difference. -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Hi Bruce, Well, when I was using 3.4.3 I was experiencing locking up when using PCI Passthrough. Xen 4.0 fixed this though. Now however, when 2 VMs are doing something intensive, the system will freeze for a few minutes. However this could be becuase I didn''t use and CPU credits... I just really want to find a rock-solid distro that I can use for my hosting solution. Since many here have experienced problems with 32-bit DomUs using Debian/Ubuntu, this makes me worried...
