[Xen-users] Install a VM''s OS from Installation Source
I have looked hi and low for some detailed, Linux novice level information on how to do this. I have Xen installed using SUSE 10.2 amd64. I have no problems booting into Xen. I would like to create 3 guest VMs, all Suse 10.2 amd64. Where should I start? And thanks in advance. -- Thomas Miller Chrome Portal Project Manager CPCUG Programmers SIG Chairperson (formally Delphi) Delphi Client/Server Certified Developer BSS Accounting & Distribution Software BSS Enterprise Accounting FrameWork http://www.bss-software.com http://programmers.cpcug.org/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/chromeportal/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/uopl/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/dbexpressplus _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

You may try this tutorial, it has some good examples for creating a domU. Its for debian, but probably not much different than Suse. http://www.howtoforge.com/debian_sarge_xen_3.0.3 Adam On 12/18/06, Thomas Miller <tmiller@bss-software.com> wrote:> I have looked hi and low for some detailed, Linux novice level > information on how to do this. > > I have Xen installed using SUSE 10.2 amd64. Excellent. My question is this. debootstrap --arch i386 sarge /vserver/vm_base/ http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian Specfically the location it is looking for the source to install on the VM disk (http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian). Is there a way to make the install look at the source files I already have on my local disk? Do I need to do something to prep them locally to install properly? And thanks in advance. If you really have no idea where to start take a look at the SuSE Docs. There is a part, which does describe the installation via Yast. Should work fine in your case as you just want to install SuSE guests. It explains how to install from CD/DVD and from and FTP source, but not from the OS sources already on the hard disk. If no one wants to help me with this, then I will stop asking and just assume you can''t do it. My motivation is several for being so persistent. #1 I am giving a talk on VMs (both VMWare and Xen) at my users group meeting in Feb and would like to be prepared #2 http://en.opensuse.org/How_to_Install_a_VM%27s_OS_from_Installation_Source is blank. If I am to write up this section for the wiki, I want to make sure that I am accurate #3 Yast in 10.2 does not work and the help docs in this area is poor at best. If I can figure this all out, I am hopeful to give the Yast programmers more info on why it is failing so it can be fixed for the next guy. (I have already done this for the Samba wizard and I am hopeful it will be working properly in the next release). If you experts would prefer I give up on the above efforts, more then happy to. -- Thomas Miller Chrome Portal Project Manager CPCUG Programmers SIG Chairperson (formally Delphi) Delphi Client/Server Certified Developer BSS Accounting & Distribution Software BSS Enterprise Accounting FrameWork http://www.bss-software.com http://programmers.cpcug.org/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/chromeportal/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/uopl/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/dbexpressplus _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Nobody will probably be able to help, anyway. BTW, your bad attitude is inflaming the situation and dragging down the general attitude of the list, along with other people who ask stupid questions and make posts about things that have little to do with the general usage of Xen (like Fedora specific things, SuSE specific things, etc.) When you are directed to the documentation, it''s _actually_ probably there. Hundreds of people didn''t just magically get it working by smelling a fart. If you can''t find it, ask an intelligent question in an intelligent way. -- Christopher G.
