Hi everybody,
i''m currently trying to run Windows NT 4.0 on Xen.

I can install it with Xen 3.3 and CPUID below:

But i have an issue with Video Card emulation of Xen 3.3.1 :
when i use Cirrus Logic emulation,
during display test the system crash with yellow or green screen.

It seems that Cirrus emulation didn''t support the resizing.

If i try stdvga mode the videocard is not recognised by Windows NT.

I tried on KVM and it works fine with cirrus logic emulation.



Is there any way to update qemu-dm with current qemu version ?

A while (> 2 years ago), I''m sure I ran up Windows NT on Xen 3.0 or
3.1. But that was on an AMD processor, and it''s highly likely that the
BIOS / NT interaction  is broken in the Intel only "simulation of
real-mode via vritual 8086 mode". The AMD processors support true Real
Mode in Virtual machine mode.

Of course, this may all have changed a huge amount, so do not rely on
my information.

my main concern is :
i have to use windows nt in 1280x1024,
how can i reach this goal with xen 3.3 or upper?

Seems there is a bug in Cirrus Video Card about screen resize.

However there is no bug on this qemu emulation with kvm.

So is there any way to patch qemu-dm video card emulator with current
qemu version?

or what is the latest version of qemu used to dev qemu-dm?
I red a doc from 2007 which said that qemu-dm is based on qemu 8.

is it still true?

if not what is the base version of qemu used in qemu-dm for xen 3.3 and
xen 3.4 ?

I think we synced with qemu 0.10.x before releasing 3.4.

I just installed xen 3.4
and now with stdvga=0
when i try to resize screen resolution the Windows NT crash.

Try disabling the acceleration stuff in xen/arch/x86/hvm/stdvga.c. Should
suffice to ''return;'' before the for-loop in stdvga_init().

i did the code correction.

And it still crash with stdvga=0
and still in 16bit 800x600 with stdvga=1.

why i can not find qemu devices'' source in hvm folder ?

Qemu vgabios-cirrus support Windows NT since 0.6.0

I guess that there is a bug between xen and qemu-dm.

Cause winnt detect videocard , able to define display size.

And when the computer restart, at display size switch, xen crash with
below errors.

It seems that qemu cirrus vga device try to write on xenbus on wrong
adress.

IIRC, Xen 3.3 once had some hvm guest''s vga emulation issues (xen and
qemu-dm are both involved); not sure if all the issues were fixed. BTW, if you
have to use xen 3.3, why not use xen xen.3.3.2? It should have more backported
fixed than xen 3.3.1.

PS, you may want to try vnc mode (namely, ensure sdl=0 and vnc=1 in guest config
file; after creating guest, use ''vncviewer localhost:0'' to
connect to guest)

In Xen 3.3.1, the full realmode emulation (rather than vmxassist) is used, so
Alexandre''s issue should have nothing to do with realmode itself.

BTW, recent Intel''s CPU can also support true Real Mode in virtual
machine mode and the feature has been supported by xen-unstable for several
months.

Is this the qemu log message of your failed xen 3.4 test?
It seems that you are using stdvga=1 because the line:

vga s->lfb_addr = f1000000 s->lfb_end = f1400000

is only printed when stdvga is used instead of cirrus.

If the qemu log you posted are not the right ones, could you please do
another test with stdvga=0 and send the qemu logs on the list?

I did the test with stdvga=0, sdl=0, vnc=1
And during display resol switch the vm crash.

log files contain only this test.

I did it with stable xen 3.4
build from source found on xen.org.

The vga screen dump function updates last_width and last_height, but
does not change the DisplaySurface that these variables describe. A
consequent vga_draw_graphic() will therefore fail to resize the surface
and crash. Fix by invalidating the display state after a screen dump,
forcing vga_draw_graphic() to reallocate the DisplaySurface.

To run Windows NT properly.

I have an idea: make sure your build environment is clean (execute make
distclean), then try:

export CONFIG_QEMU=ioemu

now build xen 3.3 again and do another test.

I made the test.

same issue:
stdvga=1
videocard is not properly identified.

stdvga=0
empty greenscreen(windows nt background) crash

run qemu /path/to/my/winnt/disk
it works well...

another idea?

i made test with qemu-0.10.6 and winnt crash as with xen 3.3 or upper.

I made test with qemu-0.9.1 and it works well.

So it''s regression bug in qemu.

My question is :
how can i use ioemu-qemu-xen based on 0.9.1 with xen-3.4.0 ?

You can''t without some development work. We provide Xen and qemu as a
matched pair because the interfaces between them change, so you pretty much
have to use the qemu version we provide.

ok :-/ thanks,
so maybe we will switch to VMWare Server ESXI as Xen can not run Windows
NT properly until now.

CPUID configuration option is required and exists only since xen 3.3 but
since xen 3.3 qemu 0.10 is included which contain regression bug on
cirrus vga card emulation.
