I also tried installing the desktop version (from this site), and had problems
launching it (first of two questions in the original post), but turns out there
are many editorial errors, so dropped that question.

Quickly: for various reasons, mostly ethical but also practical, I am trying to
convince my teacher to convert all computers to Linux, but this particular
program (CSCD) has to be able to work in order for the argument to be
persuasive. Of course, should the monks here switch to Linux, there would be a
ripple effect.
