[Wine] What Windows apps stand in the way of switching to Linux at your shop?
http://kegel.com/wine/qa/#app is a list of "must-have" Windows applications for various vertical markets (at the moment, just k12 schools and churches). These are the Windows apps that really keep a school, church, or other organization from switching to Linux. I'm hoping that this list will help focus Wine QA on those key Windows apps, and thereby increase the number of groups who can make the jump to Linux. If you have any suggestions for the list, please let me know. Thanks, Dan

In two jobs I had, netmeeting 3.0 is the single most important application that kept the organization from switching. 2005/10/6, Dan Kegel <daniel.r.kegel@gmail.com>:> http://kegel.com/wine/qa/#app is a list of "must-have" > Windows applications for various vertical markets > (at the moment, just k12 schools and churches). > These are the Windows apps that really keep a school, > church, or other organization from switching to Linux. > > I'm hoping that this list will help focus Wine QA on > those key Windows apps, and thereby increase the > number of groups who can make the jump to Linux. > > If you have any suggestions for the list, please let me know.-- http://linuxfud.org - o TIRA-TEIMA dos ataques ao software livre!

So I use BrilliantPhoto in XP. I don't care about open source in this field- give me a good program and I will pay $30 for it! BrilliantPhoto would not run for me in wine. But that was half a year ago and I have yet to try again. I got the installed to run, but could not run the program. If anybody wants to take a crack at it, I'd appreciate it. 2) Amarok just doesn't cut it for music managment. And many of my mp3's have Hebrew titles, which Amakok refused to display properly (This may be because the file names were created on a FAT32 drive running windows. I haven't check that yet.). And, sorry, but Microsoft's Media Player 10 is probably the best peice of software to ever come out of Redmond. So that too is on the 'other box'. 3) There are times when i need to run a windows app. Just this week, I had to convert some mp3's to AMR format. Try finding a linux program to do that! Again, please note that either > in Bugzilla or the Appdb. >I did some testing this evening and found that one of the bugs was a result of a Microsoft bug that I have seen quite a few times but the GUI reacted a little different so I did not suspect it. This bug is sometimes the .ncb file of a project gets corrupted causing Visual Studio to hang with 100% cpu. The difference in wine is that during the hang I can resize the window but it does not correctly refresh. After delting the .ncb file I was able to load my workspace but had a path problem when I tried to compile (probably nothing to do with wine again) so I decided to try a simple test. I tried to create a new win32 console application with mfc support. After the final step in the appwizard the porgram hung. In the terminal I launched msdev from there was the following errors: err:heap:HEAP_ValidateInUseArena Heap 0x7fcf0000: in-use arena 0x7e1fc348 next block has PREV_FREE flag err:seh:setup_exception stack overflow 180 bytes in thread 0032 eip 7ffc1d36 esp 7fb00f4c stack 0x7fb00000-0x7fc00000 I would like install VC clean on windows and use this clean copy to test to see if that makes any difference before I start a bug report the only problem is that I am just about out of space so that will have to wait until I upgrade my system this weekend. Hello Dan, Dan Kegel wrote:> http://kegel.com/wine/qa/#app is a list of "must-have" > Windows applications for various vertical markets > (at the moment, just k12 schools and churches). That's an odd choice of market segments?> If you have any suggestions for the list, please let me know.I do, but it's not for K12 or churches. Do you want them anyway?
