wine users - Nov 2002 - New to Wine (halflife upgrade fales)

Hi all,
 
 This is a total newbe mistake I'm sure but I'm stumped. I have 
installed: wine-20020605-2.i386.rpm
wine-devel-20020605-2.i386.rpm
in redhat 8.0

 I can get all the way through the setup of halflife sound test and all, 
then if I try to do the auto update it fails. It can't see a network 
connection.
I am getting errors in my terminal during the install even though it 
looks like it installs perfect (as long as I say no to "look for
upgrades")

You'd be better off with a newer version, this one is getting kind of dated.

Here is your main problem, you need to edit your .wine/config file to add a 
WinMM section that should look like this:

[WinMM]
"Drivers" = "wineoss.drv"
"WaveMapper" = "msacm.drv"
"MidiMapper" = "midimap.drv"

Is what?  Anyways, I personally like RPMs but in the case of wine, I had 
much better luck after compiling from source (which is not as hard as it 
sounds)  Basically you want to download the new version from CVS 
(instructions are on the winehq website) then unzip and read the README file 
which tells you how to compile the code(which mostly consists of running 
~/wine/tools/wineinstall or ./configure, make, make install)

I wouldn't recommend it, although madrake is based off of redhat 5.0 there 
have been a number of significant changes since that would probably cause 
your install to be less than stable.
