Vorbis - Jul 2002 - Damn!

I just tried rc4-cvs and I can't believe how good it sounds!
I can hear very little difference between the wav and the q0-ogg on my 
above-average stereo... It really makes MP3 look (sound) *pathetic* in 
comparision! I did some comparisions on a few songs, from noisy 77-punk to 
Jean-Michel Jarre to EBM/Industrial, and q0/~64kbit RC4-vorbis sounds as good 
or better than V9/~128kbit LAME-mp3 on ALL of them!
I ripped my ex-girlfriend's recordcollection (about 400 CDs) when RC2 was
just
released, using q5.. Too bad I don't have access to it anymore, or I would 
rerip it with RC4 q4 and save a lot of diskspace AND gain quality... :/
I have already converted a few friends away from MP3 and I will continue to do 
so... Showing them these results will surely convert a few more!

Well, after all these postings I had to go get the latest off CVS and see for
myself.  Man, the latest build sounds terrible.

<p><p>Bah! got you for a second.  No, it sounds great.  it really
does. I'm quiet impressed. :-)

I think saying that -q0 is better than 128 MP3 is an exaggeration tho. It is
noticeably worse, but the quality is beautifully degraded.  What I mean to say
is, while -q0 loses significant fidelity from -q1, the artefacts that you start
hearing not too harsh - the swishy sounds are still relatively subtle.  This is
what really impresses me.   I would say between -q1 and -q2 is approximately on
par with MP3 128.

-q2 sounds excellent to me.  Very listenable. I do notice a little dampening in
the high frequencies (I presume this is intentionally filtered to help the
compression), and a tiny loss of stereo separation (that I only hear because
I'm intentionally looking for it).  But again, because it doesn't add
any noticeable artefacts, it's very easy to listen to!  This would be an
ideal quality level to use in a portable OGG player.
