Hi, I'm planning to re-encode all my MP3s with Ogg Vorbis but I wanted to wait until 1.0 was released because of channel-coupling. I read that would increase quality about 40% at the same bitrate and I didn't want to encode my files wasting all that bitrate ... Now, since 1.0rc1 is released I am wondering if I am actually able to use channel-coupling right now. I installed all the newest libraries and the latest version of the vorbis-tools. Am I using channel-coupling now if I encode CDs using oggenc? Please CC to me as I am not subscribed to this list. Hi: No, you don't yet have channel coupling. The reason is that only the decoder is RC1, the encoder is still pretty much beta4. Monty said a couple of days ago that he hopes to checkin coupling code soon. Monty also said that it should be trivial to write an application to "couple" previously encoded files, so you can probably go ahead now and gain the benefit later if you want. Hello Magnus, 1. julij 2001, 15:31:25, you wrote:> Now, since 1.0rc1 is released I am wondering if I am actually able to use > channel-coupling right now. Encoder is still Beta4 - which doesn't support channel coupling yet. However, it was said, that you'll be able to losslessly add channel coupling after the files are encoded, reducing the size. BTW: I don't suggest you to re-encode MP3 files to Ogg, as you'll only loose quality this way. Encode to Ogg only from original CDs, or from MP3 if you *really* don't have any other option. -- Jernej Simoncic, jernej.simoncic@guest.arnes.si http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/ ICQ: 26266467 --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. Hi, <quote> BTW: I don't suggest you to re-encode MP3 files to Ogg, as you'll only loose quality this way. Encode to Ogg only from original CDs, or from MP3 if you *really* don't have any other option. </quote> That's what I am actually doing (and was trying to say). <quote> Note that this lossless channel coupling will not be as efficient as true psycho-acoustic channel coupling, so to gain the maximum from joint-stereo, we will all have to wait for RC1 encoder release. </quote> Is it clear when the RC1 encoder will be released? And anyway, what good is the 1.0 decoder if I can't have channel-coupled encoding? Would you suggest that I wait until after the 1.0 release before I start re-encoding all of my CDs (which would be a lot of work ...)? Or is beta4 actually good enough? What bitrate should I choose with beta4 to achieve archive quality (maybe having the option to add lossless channel coupling, reducing the size of my files)? Please remember to CC to me, as I am not subsribed to the list.
