Everybody, We're shutting down irc.xiph.org, which has hosted our official development and support IRC channels for the past couple of years. The main channels (#vorbis, #icecast, #theora, #positron) have moved to irc.freenode.net; please go there with your support or development questions. We'd also like to take this opportunity to refocus the channels on development and support. Freenode is a network for open source developers and their projects; please try to keep discussion on topic. Adiabatic and vanguardist have started a #vorbis-talk channel for social stuff. The current server will be shutdown on or before next Sunday, October 5, to give everyone some time to learn of the change and migrate. A number t of people have asked about the reasons behind the move. We've never liked running the ircd on the server that hosts the more critical cvs/mail/web services. The Xiph.org Foundation board made a decision some time ago to remove the irc server; in the intervening months our irc opers haven't been able to find a more suitable host. The move to the freenode network represents the most logical choice of network for our project. I'd also like to thank our opers for their work in running the xiph.org irc network. We really appreciate your time and effort. Of course, i understand this may not have been an option for you, because you are mixing up Corecodec as a multimedia community and host, and some of the projects hosted on there. I think this is a very very poor move. Xiph is hardly approachable now. I accept that the guys are most probably very busy but it's been a year since something actually came out into the public eye. They really should be out there banging a drum and keeping developers interested. I was very disappointed that Jack and Monty’s thoughts were all relayed second-hand to HA's recent patent thread. That combined with the dropping of a proper irc channel makes me think that Xiph is going in the wrong direction when it comes to attracting developers. They really can't afford that when the only significant Vorbis development has been done by one single outside enthusiast.
~Mark.
--- Ralph Giles <giles@xiph.org> wrote:> Everybody, > > We're shutting down irc.xiph.org, which has > hosted our official development and support > IRC channels for the past couple of years.
__________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I'd just like to throw my 2 cents in here. I can understand the need to drop a xiph irc server. However, I do take issue with moving to Freenode. The reason that we moved so long ago (as I understand it) is that an overwhelming flood of politics made real vorbis discussion uncomfortable. A few people took things personally and acted out, and pretty soon everybody was on edge. Just looking at all three channels from the two networks now, it seems that this same effect is already starting to return at the very mention of this situation coming back to everybody's attention. On top of that freenode has a history of technical problems (splits, rehubbings, dns failures like that one they suffered yesterday), and political problems (accusations of censorship mostly). If someone can give me a reason to believe that these issues have been resolved, I'd be more than happy to hear it. I just haven't seen any evidence of it yet. In lieu of that, can we please consider another irc network, like OFTC, or Slashnet?
