Hi,
Seems majordomo allows me in now ;)
For those of you who don't know me, Vakor asked me to do 1.0 rpm packages
right before the release, which I did. I was pretty new to vorbis
internals but I hope I managed to do a good job.
In any case, last night on IRC in #vorbis someone was pretty rude to me in
complaining about a problem he had with them. In the end I lost my
temper because of the things he accused me of, but that doesn't change the
fact that there might be a problem. Of course, had he actually asked
normally, he would've gotten the answer straight up, and even while being
mad I took the time to provide him with the answers.
Let's start with the basic problem, it concerns libao.
The libao rpm I provided has plug-ins for oss, esd and alsa 0.9. I think
it's a good idea to have as many plug-ins as possible without actually
requiring all of those underlying rpms - so the user has a choice of
output plug-ins. His "complaint" was that there wasn't any alsa
rpm.
Well, there is one, which I made, and which I put in the readme I supplied
with my packages (http://urgent.rug.ac.be/thomas/vorbis/)
The problem is that the rpm seems to "require" libasound.so.2. That
last
one is an error which I should get fixed.
I checked last night and that readme didn't make it on vorbis.com - would
it be possible to also put that readme online ? I think that was kind of
his major gripe with the packages.
He did ignore the facts that
a) there IS a readme that explained the possible problems with the
packages
b) he wasn't FORCED to install 0.8.3 of libao, since afaik 0.8.2 works
fine as well
and on top of that, he wasn't even complaining for himself, since he
builds them himself anyway, but about the countless of users he has had to
help due to my stupidity. I have been in and out of #vorbis after the
release to check up on people having issues with the packages, and no one
complained about what he actually complained about.
It is true however that the package for libao could be fixed to not
explicitly require the alsa so library. I will look into how to do that,
because that's done by rpm's auto requirements lookup. RPM decides,
since
the alsa libao plug-in requires that so, that the whole package requires
it as well. I know I can workaround that, I just need some time to do
that right.
In the meantime, it might be easier if I could just coordinate all this
rpm stuff with the person who puts them on the site at vorbis.com, so that
I can get the problem fixed properly.
It's not because one person is incredibly rude to me that I don't want
to
help out anymore ;)
So, let me know who best to contact so I can get that fixed as quickly as
possible.
Thanks,
Thomas
