I'm interested to find out how many people are running tftp-hpa versus atftpd. I'm almost a bit surprised in how many people seem to be using tftp-hpa; for modern Unix systems (including Linux), I would in general assume atftpd to be a better choice. If you have tried both and specifically chosen (as opposed to "it was already installed", etc.) I'd be interested in why. This has a fair bit of impact as to where to take future development. Thanks, -hpa
I won't use atftpd because it can only be started from inetd. BTW, is there a reason to run tftpd as root? I know that the daemon forks and abandons privileges to service a request, but I didn't find a reason for it not to do it permanently. I patch it to run as nobody after binding to the port.
hpa, Been using tftp-hpa for almost 3 years now, never had a problem with it, so there's not a reason to switch. While working at my previous job (a web hosting company) we had it deployed at various data centers across the world and never ran into problems with it. Currently I use it in the lab here, but only during actual installs, and there's generally not too many of those happening at once. James James S. When I setup a new server though, the distro had an aftpd package, so I tried it, again without problems. For me this was a laziness issue, aftpd was packaged, and tftp-hpa wasn't (on SuSE anyway).
