lattice + plotmath: how to get a variable in bold face?
Dear all, How can I get a bold "1000" in the title? I would like to use a variable (as opposed to putting in "1000" directly). library(lattice) N <- 1000 xyplot(0~0, xlab.top=list(label=as.expression(bquote(bold("foo" ~ .(N) ~ "bar"))), font=2, cex=1.2)) ## => "font=2" is ignored (of course) Cheers, Marius

splom, plotmath: how to add three lines of information with alignment?
Dear expeRts, I would like to create a scatter plot matrix with splom(). The lower panel should contain some additional information about the samples shown in the upper panel plot, see the splom() call below. Now two questions came up: (1) The lower panels show "tau" and "alpha" on top of each other. How can I plot *three* expressions on top of each other? I tried several

How to use expression(italic()) in a "vectorized" way (within a function)?
Dear expeRts, I would like to use expression() for creating labels in a splom, as shown in the first minimal example below. Is there any way I can simplify having to write "expression(italic(...))" several times? The second example is what I tried so far, but I can't manage to get italic() to work. Moreover, it still seems bulky... Cheers, Marius ## minimal example (working but

lattice: How to vertically adjust an axis label?
Dear expeRts, How can I vertically adjust an axis tick label so that it is nicely aligned with the other labels? library(lattice) xyplot(0~0, xlim=c(0,3), scales=list(x=list(at=c(1,1.1), labels=c(expression(hat(theta)[italic(n)]),expression(theta))))) ## aim: move the leftmost expression up so that theta is nicely aligned with the second theta. plotmath: how to create a vector of expressions?
Dear expeRts, I would like to use LaTeX-like symbols in keys via plotmath. Below is a minimal example. I get: Error in fun(key = list(x = 0.5, y = 0.8, text = list(list(expression(paste("(", : first component of text must be vector of labels What's wrong? How can I create the required vector (of expressions)? Cheers, Marius library(lattice) val <- matrix(1, nrow = 10, ncol

Seed in 'parallel' vignette
Hi, This is most likely only a minor technicality, but I saw the following: On page 6 of the 'parallel' vignette (http://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-devel/library/parallel/doc/parallel.pdf), the random-number generator "L'Ecuyer-CMRG" is said to have seed "(x_n, x_{n-1}, x_{n-2}, y_n, y_{n-1}, y_{n-2})". However, in L'Ecuyer et al. (2002), the seed is given with

Why is format(10000, big.mark = "\\,") not 10\,000?
Hi, why does format(10000, big.mark = "\\,") not give me "10\,000"? How can I get this kind of "big.mark"? Cheers, Marius

How to efficiently compare each row in a matrix with each row in another matrix?
Dear expeRts, I have two matrices A and B. They have the same number of columns but possibly different number of rows. I would like to compare each row of A with each row of B and check whether all entries in a row of A are less than or equal to all entries in a row of B. Here is a minimal working example: A <- rbind(matrix(1:4, ncol=2, byrow=TRUE), c(6, 2)) # (3, 2) matrix B <-

R process killed when allocating too large matrix (Mac OS X)
Hi Simon, thanks for your quick reply. 1) ... so you can reproduce this? 2) Do you know a way how this can be 'foreseen'? We allocate larger matrices in the copula package depending on the user's input dimension. It would be good to tell her/him "Your dimension is quite large. Be aware of killers in your neighborhood"... before the killer attacks. Thanks & cheers,

How to colorize the panel backgrounds of pairs()?
Dear expeRts, I would like to colorize the backgrounds of a pairs plot according to the respective panel number. Here is what I tried (without success): count <- 0 mypanel <- function(x, y, ...){ count <<- count+1 bg. <- if(count %in% c(1,4,9,12)) "#FDFF65" else NA points(x, y, cex=0.5, bg=bg) } U <- matrix(runif(4*500), ncol=4) pairs(U, panel=mypanel) I

lattice splom: how to adjust space between tick marks and tick labels?
Dear expeRts, how can I decrease the space between the tick marks and the corresponding labels in an splom? See here: library(lattice) U <- matrix(runif(4000), ncol = 8) splom(U, axis.text.cex = 0.2) # => space between the [small] tick labels and tick marks is/seems to be too large I checked ?panel.pairs but could not find an option for that. Italicize Greek symbols in axis
Hello there, Is there any way to italicize Greek symbols such as mu in axis? From the help files of mathematical anotations: "Note that bold, italic and bolditalic do not apply to symbols, and hence not to the Greek symbols such as mu which are displayed in the symbol font. They also do not apply to numeric constants.", it seems that it cannot be done. Thanks, Bingzhang Chen

italic font on cairo devices in R 3.4
Hi all, I have the following problem: Since R 3.4.0, italic fonts rendered on Cairo devices appear pixelated. Here's a minimal example: cairo_pdf('test.pdf') plot(1:10, ylab=expression(italic(test))) dev.off() The same problem occurs with bolditalic, but not bold. I am using Debian Stretch. Several friends tried the same on their machines, another Debian machine has the same

Partial italic in graph titles when looping
Dear all, I have a rather complicated problem. I am trying to loop through making graphs, so that the graph-making process is fully automated. For each graph, I'd like to make sure the corresponding title is formatted properly. The titles will be a combination of a gene name and numerical position within the gene. The gene name should be italic-bold, whereas the gene position should be

italic (PR#7932)
Full_Name: G. Grothendieck Version: R version 2.1.0, 2005-05-14 OS: Windows XP Submission from: (NULL) (216.59.254.207) This code: > plot(1:10) > text(5,5,lab=expression(italic(22*"33"))) has the effect of italicizing 33 (which is a character string) but not 22 (which is not). I would have thought that both, not just 33, would be italicized. I had previously posted about this
