Box around legends (and postscript?)
Hi all
Humbly begging forgiveness for bothering the list with yesterday's
lame--arsed question. Postscript, being a vector graphics file format,
is, um, resolution independant. The problem as Peter pointed out was
with the gimp, which defaults to 100dpi resolution when viewing
postscript files.
I have another (lame?) question. I have noted that when I produce a

Blockiness
I tried out Theora to see what the future holds, and see some pros and cons.
As a great plus, I have noticed that, even at the lowest quality (ie. "-v 0"),
the detail, and overally quality is clearly better than anything else available.
On the negative side, at qualities comparable to MPEG4, I've notcied a great
deal of blockiness. It's not as bad as blockiness from other

Mozilla port.
I have a very strange problem with Mozilla since I updated it to the
latest stable. The font used on the menus are rendered extermly badly
such as lots of white spaces between the letters, large blocky font.
The font option does not seem to change any of those fonts which makes
me think it maybe something to do with X11. However, none of the other
things I use have any font issues...
Any idea

Is there a way to add a legend to an image plot? I don't see any
reference to legends in the documentation (so I suppose the answer is
no?). Although the documentation says image takes plot() parameters, it
isn't clear to me how the usual use of legend in a plot command

Font quality in base graphics
I am attempting to get publication quality graphs using R on Ubuntu. I
encounter lots of problems in using cex to control font size: for instance
cex=1.5 results in very blocky characters. I then tried to use res=1200
while creating a PNG file, hoping that this would solve the problem, but it
did not. When doing the above, a second problem appeared: the font size
relative to the graphics decreased

Some time ago I asked about tab complete functionality for R under
ESS on windows. I never got it working as well as I might have liked until
today. It is still slow the first time while all the environments are checked
but after that it works well.
The solution below

rsyncd listing of directories
I just took a look at the 2.5.5 codebase to see how easy it would be to
write a little driver script that downloads a big directory tree from an
rsync daemon the chunky way (get a list of a module's subdirectories and
do the transfer by subdirectory). The reason for doing this is obvious
when you have large directory trees, as is the case for many of us.
Unfortunately the way list_only is

What are my smbd's doing ? (was Re: secrets.tdb locking fun!)
Hi all,
We're still suffering here with odd performance issues on our
Samba 3.0.24 install here on our big chunky Solaris 9 box.
The user perceived issue is slow performance (whilst browsing in Windows
Explorer, or opening files from within applications etc.etc.)
The obvious symptom on the server is a collection of smbd's at the top
of the 'top' listing. 4 or 5 or so taking

Unsightly lines from x*y grid in levelplot with Postscript
When I generate levelplot figures with Postscript, the lines from
the underlying grid (i.e., the x and y in z ~ x* y)
show up as faint white lines in the output. If I have a dense grid,
the lines wash out the contour colors. I can avoid the problem if
I use png instead, but that brings up other problems. Any
ideas for how I can get Postscript to not show those lines around
the cells?

Current state of theora & Windows port?
Hello everyone,
I'm developing software for a marketing company which creates multimedia
presentations. We're currently using proprietary Windows software, but
are looking for a royalty-free cross-platform solution. It's important
that the solution is royalty- and patent-free because the presentations
are copied and given out in large quantities for free (as in beer ;-)

white lines in large plot
Hi,
I have a plot with about 2 million points. It should be a fairly dense
plot over the reals, but I'm seeing many narrow, white vertical lines
uniformly spread in my plot where nothing was plotted. I'm using a
period as the plot character. I've played around with the cex
parameter, but I can't eliminate the white lines without making the plot
look too blocky.
I'm
