Agile Web Development book - version 4.0 released
I don''t know if I missed this on the list, but the Agile Web Development with Rails book is now at version 4.0, for those of us who bought the PDF from the Prag Prog site. Just a few typos and corrections from the looks of it, but can''t hurt to get the latest. You can reorder the book for download at: http://books.pragprog.com/titles/rails/reorder Cheers, Tom

Ruby at O''Reilly Rough Cuts
Not sure if this is old news or not, but it would appear that both the Ruby Cookbook and a Rails book are now available for purchase at O''Reilly Rough Cuts (something akin to PragProg''s beta book program): http://rubyurl.com/nHz http://my.safaribooksonline.com/?mode=roughcuts&srchtext=ROUGHCUTS I haven''t tried them yet, but it definitely seems worth checking out.

Spec''ing ActionMailer
Good morning (Pacific Time). I have a controller action that, as a side-effect, sends an email to an administrator. I want it to do something like this: specify "when someone successfully signs up, an email should be sent to the administrator with the person''s contact page" do post :signup, {...lots o'' params} response should_be success #

Rendering User attributes in XML
Let''s say an app has a User, and a User has many friends. Also, let''s say the app authentication was built on the restful_authentication plugin, and we have email and password in the Users table. The friends controller index might look like this; # GET /users/1/friends # GET /users/1/friends.xml def index @users = @user.friends respond_to do |format| format.html

a better "should have valid associations"
This is pretty much the same as last time around, if you recall. Thanks to Wilson for converting to the new form. I''ve added a few lines. Basically, it iterates over your model associations and does two things. - First, just try to call the association. Usually fixes speeling erors or other such silliness. - Second, try to find a record with an :include on the association. This

New version of AWDwR
Folks: I''ve uplaoded the B1.05 version of AWDwR. It fixes a number of reported errata (and a few that weren''t reported :), and adds two significant changes: 1. It now uses the new Active Record decimal -> BigDecimal conversion. I''ve personally been waiting for this for a long time, and I''m really happy it''s now part of core. However,

Newbie: lambda do...end.should change(Model, :count).by(1). Doesn''t work
Hi to everyone, I''m an RSpec, and BDD in general, newbie so in order to learn I have chosen to use my personal website as a tesbed. I''m having difficulties juggling with mocks, and in particula with the following code. Here''s the controller action: def create @album = Album.new(params[:album]) if @album.save flash[:notice] = "album saved"

[LLVMdev] dot release for 3.4
We are starting to move to using llvm/clang x86 as the starting point for mips native compilers. It's important to make sure that gcc cross compilers can do this too but sometimes there are issues there; especially now as c++11 is moving into the foreground. We are working to also make sure this works. As 3.5 llvm is probably around the corner; our use of clang/llvm for this starting

Best way to implement?
So I''m new to all this Rails stuff and this is probably a database design-related question to, but here it is... Just for learning I''m trying to build a little real estate listings application. Of course there is the listings model which will store basic information like name, price, description, and all that jazz. I''m to the point where I want to figure out how to

RoR book for beginner
Hi folks, I see there are two books recommended on the RoR website. As usual I would like some recommendation from users on this matter. I am currently a .NET developer and familiar with a few languages outside of .NET. Which one of these books would be suitable for me to get started with end-to-end development? Or can someone perhaps recommend a different book they found useful? Many thanks,

Assertions for asynchronous behaviour
Hi all, In GOOS[1] they use an assertion called assertEventually which samples the system for a success state until a certain timeout has elapsed. This allows you to synchronise the tests with asynchronous code. Do we have an equivalent of that in the Ruby / RSpec world already? I know capybara has wait_until { } but that''s fairly rudimentary - the failure message isn''t very

Web Services testing... Agile Book p. 435
I am attempting to test the web services added during chapter 20 of the Agile book. The code as written in the book yields 2 errors: test_find_product_by_id(BackendControllerApiTest): XMLParserError: syntax error Anyone hit this yet and get it to work? Thanks. first ajax demo in Rails book - does it work for anyone?
Just tried the first AJAX example in the rails book (p.391-392, the ''word guessing'' thing), and the AJAX partial used seems to render as a full page. I''m not sure whether it''s a) a partial bug b) some interaction between ajax and partials c) a change since the book came out or d) pilot error I''ve checked the errata pages and it''s flagged up
