gbm for cost-sensitive binary classification?
I recently use gbm for a binary classification problem. As expected, it gets very good results, based on Area under ROC with 7-fold cross validation. However, the application (malware detection) is cost-sensitive, getting a FP (classify a clean sample as a dirty one) is much worse than getting a FN (miss a dirty sample). I would like to tune the gbm model biased to very low FP rate.

Linux malware attack
SlashDot had an article today on a Linux server malware attack,
<http://it.slashdot.org/story/14/03/18/2218237/malware-attack-infected-25000-linuxunix-servers>.
I wonder if there is a simple test to see if a CentOS machine
has been infected in this way?
The article mentions Yara and Snort rules to test for this,
but I wonder if there is something simpler?
Alternatively, are there Yara or

Recommendations for image malware detection?
Hello all --
This is not a CentOS specific question, but I have a feeling some of you
are involved in enterprise malware efforts, so here goes.
Does anyone have recommendations for malware detection that includes
detection in image files? I'm looking for something that could be
integrated into a batch cron process as opposed to a client end download
check.
Thanks.

OT: Possible for Malware against Windows boxes to attack Firefox on Linux?
My belief is that this is not possible, but there are many extremely
knowledgeable people participating on this list and I would like to
know if it is in fact possible. I am running CentOS 5.3 (32 bit) fully
updated. Browser is Mozilla Firefox v.3.0.7.
I believe both times this happened, once yesterday and once today, I
was surfing on the web site of my favorite singer/musical group; or in

The pros and cons of a wiki AppDB

There are a lot of apps without maintainers, and there might be users of those apps who would be willing take a few minutes to post bits of useful information in a wiki, but don't want the responsibility of being a maintainer. Sure, they could just post info in a comment, but user comments are

R is a virus, spyware or malware (gasp!)
After a search session in Google, I found this page:
http://www.prevx.com/filenames/X1993788672854780728-0/RGUI.EXE.html
which classifies Rgui.exe (clearly stated as "R for Windows GUI
front-end") in a database of virus, spyware and malware!

Testing for Windows malware under Wine
After using Linux for some time, I realized that this might be another good use for wine.
I've been seeing the commercials for PC SpeedScan by Ascentive and have even been asked about it by non-techie friends. Since my Ubuntu system isn't real mission critical, I decided to throw caution to the winds and installed the 'product'.
One behavior of malware is that it purposely does

symantec treating R-devel r73003 for Windows as malware
Hallo Martin
The result is the same. The R exe file is downloaded with some note about possible danger. When I try to run it, it is inspected and deleted from its location.
Symantec message is enclosed.
Our IT said it has something to do with installer type, but it is beyond my expertise.

An interesting development:
Running it from the home directory didn't help, but
running it, letting it fail, then running it again
works (regardless of location). The installer
finishes ok, and places all the files in Program
Files/Internet Explorer.

Thank you, Petr. I do think it is quite appropriate for this list.

OfficeScan deletes Rterm as malware
I'm not sure if the problem is actually with R but thought I should
report this anyway.
After Peter's email regarding the R 3.5.2 release today, I installed the
Windows version right away (directly from CRAN and not from a mirror).
Unfortunately, my institute's AV sofware TrendMicro OfficeScan 12.0.5147
Service Pack 1 stops and deletes Rterm.exe when running Rcmd.exe INSTALL
