why I don''t like to use some 3rd party plugins
I''m not a professional developer in the sense that I''ve had any formal training or experience. I taught myself programming two years ago and have since moved to ruby and shortly after to rails - even now, i only develop as a hobby. This means that a lot of developer best practises are foreign or unknown to me, that''s why I love rails so much. You learn so much just

Acts as Most Popular plugin
Make your models feel like they are in high school again. This plugin retrieves the most frequently occurring values for each column. It adds methods of the form most_popular_[pluralized_column_name]. Check out <http://shanesbrain.net/articles/2006/08/04/acts-as-most-popular-rails-plugin> for sample usage. The plugin is mostly just a group_by in disguise. It is probably overkill if you

fixtures getting a little hard to manage
I have lots of tests which rely on fixtures being a particular state in order to pass. For example, one test checks that a User object can have no more than 3 associated ''Page'' objects at a time. That''s a simple example but I have more complicated tests too. The problem is I sometimes add a fixture without realising it''ll affect the tests and everything

to ajax or not to ajax
before I started building my latest rails app, I made the decision to make good use of ajax. My reasonsing was that users would benefit from the quicker page updates - the application provides various different types of insurance quotes, and has several multi-page forms and reports that can be drilled down 5 or 6 levels deep in some cases - so it seemed like a good candidate for ajax Now

contents of /lib automatically loaded?
I''ve written a simple replacement (not extension) of Ruby''s array class with some added functionality. I defined it in array.rb and put the file in rails_root/lib but when i fire up the console the class isn''t being loaded. How can I have my class automatically loaded and used instead of the built in Ruby class?

OT: finding a designer (bit of a rant)
I''ve written my app already. It outputs valid xhtml and I need a stylesheet to drop over the top. How hard is it for people to understand that? It''s a small project, they''d have to do the main design/layout, and then a little custom styling for some specific elements which don''t appear on every page. That''s the point of CSS right? write once, use

fcgi woes
Hi all I''m running rails on apache with fcgi under windows I have a module which I''ve included in one of my models, but if I change any code in the module, i have to restart apache in order for the changes to take effect. i tried some suggestions from folks in the IRc channel, namely to put RAILS_ENV = ''development'' in environment.rb but that doesn''t

Thanks Alan. While working on this draft, I accidentally deleted the old content, and now I cannot edit the page anymore. Can you re-add my edit access on this page? gettext and maintenance
hi all my app has two languages, I''m using gettext to manage them and so far so good. My question is about maintenance. If I fix a typo in a _() enclosed string, for example in an rhtml file, then the translated version of that string will no longer be valid will it? even if the translation itself had no errors. Is that the case and if so will i be forced to have the _() string

Need help with extending a plugin
hey folks I''ve installed the plugin acts_as_taggable_on_steroids (henceforth aatos), and i already have some tagging functionality set up, using the same approach (ie a Tag and a Tagging class with associated tables) as aatos. So, i want my existing Tag and Taggings methods, plus some other methods i have in a module which i include with the taggable classes (ie the ones that would call

acts_as_automatic
Acts as automatic has two purposes: 1) provide acts_as_automatic act, which will automatically run the appropriate methods when conventions are adhered to (e.g. if you have category_id, it will assume that the model belongs_to :category). Only belongs_to via something_id is currently implemented. 2) Allow the creation of associations.yml, which will hold associations instead of inside each

best practice: raise an exception or return false
just wondering how others deal with invalid/illegal operations on their models? until now, I''ve simply been returning true or false depending on wether or not the operation succeeded, but that doesn''t tell the calling function why the operation failed (if it failed). I could use custom exceptions, but is it good practice to raise an exception on every invalid action or just

Alan, I knew of the Dell article, as I have all of those saved for reference. [1] I was just wondering if you knew of any that were for someone knew to Linux. You know the Microsoft type tutorials that have screenshot with them. That's the question I get asked a lot of times from around my home area. In turn when these users that are new to Linux they get discouraged when they can't

New release of ez-where plugin
Hello friends- There is a new release of the ez-where plugin. This plugin makes it easy to do complex ActiveRecord queries without writing any SQL. Ruby operators are mapped to SQL operators like so: foo == ''bar'' #=> ["foo = ?", ''bar''] foo =~ ''%bar'' #=> ["foo LIKE ?", ''%bar'']
