FreeBSD in general
Hi there guys... I've been watching the list for a while, had a quick
question.
I work for a company (Turtle Beach) that makes a product that takes MP3
files that reside on your PC or Network Attached Storage, and lets you play
them anywhere else in your home. (From your stereo for example.)
Anyway, we've added basic MP3 streaming support (and have now gone to
external beta) that

Accessing files via symlink, does client see a difference?
I have an ancient device, several actually, called an Audiotron that I
use Samba for to access media files.
Now, I realize these are old and finicky devices.
For ease of management, I keep my media files separated into 4.5GB
directories (easy to burn to DVD) and then
I have a script that goes into each of those directories and creates one
big directory full of symlinks pointing into each

Need a little help with Samba 3.5.5 on FreeNAS 7.2.5543
Good afternoon all. I have an odd problem that has me stumped and I'm hoping
someone here may be able to help. Recently I switched from a Gentoo Linux
based OS to FreeNAS. The version of Samba running on FreeNAS is 3.5.5 (and
was the same under Linux). I mainly use my FreeNAS/Samba box to share MP3
files to an Audiotron. One of the files is the Turtle Beach radio file,
radio_tr.txt. When I was

Smarter flac / samba VFS module possible?
Hi all -
Hope this isn't too OT - I've been playing with the file extention
mapper VFS module for samba (http://file-ext-map.sourceforge.net/) to
play flac files on my Audiotron. The above module takes any *.flac file
and presents it as a *.wav to the client, and decodes on the fly when
the file is read. It seems to work pretty well, but I often get the
first second or so of a song

[Bridge] Unexpected bridge behavior (Bug? You decide.)
While using the linux bridge module in 2.6.10, the kernel seems to
munge the source IP address of broadcast UDP packets if they come from
"0.0.0.1", and sticks on an address of the linux host.
I humbly submit that re-writing the source address of packets is not
proper behavior for a bridge, even if those source addresses are not
traditionally valid.
Sure, 0.0.0.1 isn't a valid

R not loading
I am having a problem with loading R on my 64 bit computer. It used to load perfectly until I upgraded to R 3.0.0 now it takes about 10 to even 20 minutes ? Does anyone know how to remedy this problem?

Hi Everyone,
Will samba handle printing to a printer connected to the network with
a jet direct card. I currently print to a locally connected laser
jet 4 plus and need to add a color printer as well. Will samba
handle printing to an IP address or is the only solution to try and
add another parrallel port. I am running RH 6.1 and Samba 2.06. I

Sluggish samba...no change
Thanks to those who responded to my previous post. I have
tried all suggestions and found no change.
A quick review:
Samba 3.0.11, OpenBSD 3.6, hub connected net, no routers
or firewalls involved. An Audiotron music box and a
WindowsXP machine in addition to the OpenBSD box.
And the issues were the same when Samba 2.x and OBSD
3.4 were installed.

Sluggish Samba
Hi,
I took the plunge and installed the latest version of OpenBSD
3.6 and SAMBA 3.0.11 (this because I found a patch for the
OBSD ports tree).
So I now have all that up and running. Both my XP box and
my Audiotron can get to the SAMBA shares.
I did this upgrade because the problem I'm about to describe
is exactly the same as before I upgraded from 3.4 OBSD, 2.x
Samba. I know others

cwhmisc package error
R-listers,
I'm working on a project where I need to get the lowercase of the county
variable in a dataset alike to the example below (only difference is that
the full dataset has all the states and counties in the southeast United
States). I keep getting this strange error with the lowerize function
(which didn't occur the first few times I use the code below), and oddly
enough the error

I'm not sure Bery (the author) is subscribed here; he's probably
the best one to ask first.

bitstream problem: resyncing...
This one really has me stumped.
I'm running 866MHz, 256MB RAM, 80GB Disk (7200RPM) on Linux-mandrake 8.2
icecast 1.3.12 & ices 0.2.3 & lame 3.91
all mp3s encoded with lame 3.91 or higher and --r3mix (VBR)
Sorry for the long email but I'm hoping to get someone out there that's seen
this before and give me some advice...

Segfault in ices
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

I run FreeBSD-4.5-STABLE, along with icecast 1.3.12, and I've been having
two problems with ices 0.2.2.
1) When I give ices an empty playlist file and tell it to randomize, I get
a segfault every time. When I give it the same playlist with Randomize set
to 0, it tells me that the playlist is empty instead of crashing.
2) ices can't

Read variable column width data
Reading data with variable column widths.
Here are several lines of a txt data set I would like to read.
The number of variables is fixed at 13 . The problem is how to read the
first variable when it can contain blank space-- for example " Alabama
(Seasonally Adjusted)" , "St. Clair", etc.

factors in R. I have data with the following headings:

"Aspect" "AspCat" "Slope"
