udial.wav problem
I was doing some testing with RC2 and I noticed that RC2 doesn't encode past 19kHz with this clip (-b256 and -b350). There are no problems with this clip like it was before, but this clip contains signal past 19kHz which is audible as a faint high-frequency hiss - and that hiss is gone in the encoded file since RC2 cuts off at 19kHz. I think that -b256 and -b350 should encode at least up to

But I've been on a lot of lists where newbies who thought they were being ignored

applaud.wav sounds worse in 1.0?
I've been running through a collection of hard to encode samples that the lame developers use, and others, doing ABX testing at various quality levels looking for my personal sweet spot. Last time I did this for RC3 I found that most samples where pretty transparent around the 3.5-4 region (my ears aren't that well trained, and I don't want them to be :-), but this time I noticed

Pesky homemade function code
Hi all- this seems to be simple to figure out but since im new to writing functions I dont know what is happening. Here is my code along with the error I am receiving: semivario=function(data,ids,times,resids){ id=unique(data$ids) index=combinations(length(data$times[data$ids==id[1]]),2) time=gamma=numeric(dim(index)[1]) for (j in 1:dim(index)[1]){

[LLVMdev] Calling functions across modules. And those pesky vectors!
Before I get started with more questions, thanks for the prompt reply on my last set question, that was much appreciated. First, I found references to lazy inling and optimizations for calling functions across modules, but I can't figure out how to do that. If I just take a Function* that I got out of one module and call it from the other, it doesn't work. What's the general

another seriously corrupt ext3 -- pesky journal
Hi Ted and all, I have a couple of questions near the end of this message, but first I have to describe my problem in some detail. The power failure on Thursday did something evil to my ext3 file system (box running RH9+patches, ext3, /dev/md0, raid5 driver, 400GB f/s using 3x200GB IDE drives and one hot-spare). The f/s got corrupt badly and the symptoms are very similar to what Eddy described

pesky \usage-warnings with R CMD check
I?m in the process of preparing a package for CRAN. The package is called ?exportR? and since it really just consists of one function, I found it natural to call it ?exportR? too. The function returns a function that does the actual job, but it is set up to work in different ways, depending on the arguments given to its creator. In short: library( exportR ) exporter <- exportR( the, arguments

How to choose quality
Hi I made a CD-backup with cdparanoia | oggenc and I tried to use different values of -q listening to the effect by cdparanoia | oggenc -o - | mplayer -. The best quality was 8 -- why? How does Novergence do it ?
I had just about about sold a new asterisk phone system to a local company when they called back asking if I could match a proposal from Novergence.com. I haven't seen anything on paper but was told their proposal was to provide a new phone system that would replace the existing 8 line 12 extension system, provide an internet T-1, unlimited local and long distance, voice mail, and two

Some pre-RC1 listening tests
Hello everyone, ff123 compiled Monty's branch of the RC1 encoder, see his post on r3mix.net forum: http://66.96.216.160/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=c&action=display&num=994299736&start=30 Anyway it only supports ~128kbps mode, so I did a quick listening test with some files that bugged vorbis beta4. grace.wav - the right channel is still a bit watery, and I think this can be seen

OT: Perfect Pitch
I won't bother quoting all of Moz's statements of how sound is interpreted by those blessed/cursed with tape recorders in their heads :) I will add that his whole explanation of perfect pitch perception easily offers an explanation as to why some individuals will only archive flac/pac/ape (Moz - do you?) and those of us that do not perceive that level of detail and are fine using ogg

Samba 2.2.5 and openldap 2.1.2
Hi, I'm having problems with the current samba releases (2.2.4 + 2.2.5) and the current openldap (openldap-2.1.2-1) redhat rawhide RPMS. I suppose samba is having problems with LDAP v3, because when I try for example: [root@fatboy /tmp]# /usr/local/samba/bin/pdbedit -l Bind failed: Protocol error in syslog appears: Jun 24 00:52:55 fatboy slapd[14370]: connection_get(16) Jun 24 00:52:55

ReplayGain support for Vorbis
Hello all, I'm glad to announce to you that Vorbis now has full ReplayGain support. If you're not familiar with ReplayGain, take a look at www.replaygain.org. The main features are: a) all songs play back with equal loudness b) removes the need for normalization c) allows for clipping prevention Using it is very simple. Get a compatible decoder (ogg123, XMMS and WinAmp all support it

Streaming WAV / Converting WAV to a streamable format on the fly
Hi, I am trying to implement a web application that allows the user to playback WAV files inside a web browser. __________ Background __________ - The file server stores audio files as GSM 6.10 or TrueSpeech encoded WAV files. - The web server (most probably ASP.NET on IIS) offers the client the ability to search audio files on the file server (a different machine). - The client will be
