Ogg embedding, problem with spec and/or bugs in speexenc
(Sending again after subscribing, I guess the moderator is on vacation.) I'm working on support for tagging Speex files for Mutagen[0] and part of the specification at [1] is confusing me. It says the first page should have granulepos 0 and packetno 0. Does this really mean page sequence number 0, since the Ogg format doesn't number packets? If it doesn't mean page sequence number,

Some questions about Theora IP
Hello Theora developers, I'm doing some cursory research into Theora's IP status in preparation for asking Apple to reconsider the possibility of shipping an implementation. I have a few questions and I'm hoping knowledgeable people can help out. 1) What are the terms of any patent licenses or disclaimers, and do they have field of use restrictions or limitations on code for

Quality of vp3.2 codec?
How good is the video compression in vp3.2? For example, how does it compare (bit rate & quality) to mpeg1, mpeg2, Divx, real Video 8+, Windows Media, etc. etc. It being open source is nice and all, but if it can't be reasonably competitive then there isn't much point to it. I just haven't seen anything that compares vp32 to anything else. (Although to be honest, I haven't

Should I and can I upgrade GTK+/PyGTK?
I'm trying out different music players. One that looks promising is called Quod Libet: http://www.sacredchao.net/quodlibet I downloaded the tar file and attempted to install it. I got this message: [dave at localhost quodlibet-0.13.1]$ ./quodlibet.py E: You need GTK+ 2.6 and PyGTK 2.6 or greater. E: You have GTK+ 2.4.13 and PyGTK 2.4.0. E: Please upgrade GTK+/PyGTK. Targeted Ads
Seasons greetings! I was wondering if anyone had investigated or started any development using Icecast2 for targeting advertisements to individual listeners. This will be the next revolution in online radio and it has already started. There are several solutions at the moment, but they all seem too difficult and expensive and most of them seem to require custom software at the listeners

codec review
An article was posted at www.slashdot.org on May 4th about another review of video codecs. The review can be found at: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/codecs-103-1.htm Theora was not one of the seven codecs included in the review. I wonder how much of a window of opportunity exists before the industry stabilizes on a dominant, widely used video codec. The situation still seems to be fairly

Analogue artifact estimation
Hi List, Just batting a few ideas around here, but would it be possible to include in to the codec, estimation for common video artifacts that occur in the analogue world? For example, anything that's gone through a composite stage will likely have dot-crawl and false colour - if we can recognise this effect in the encoder, we can treat it as a special case. Other artifacts that come to

Google is acquiring On2
FYI, Google is acquiring On2: <http://www.betanews.com/article/Future-of-open-Web-video-may-change-with-Google-acquisition-of-On2/1249481107> Also on Slashdot: <http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/08/05/1742249> Anyone knows what, if anything, this means for Theora, open video and/or the Xiph.Org Foundation? Review of Mpeg-4 & on2's vp3...
The site: http://www.techimo.com/articles/index.pl?photo=33&SID=12&tag=SNnb323 has a review & comparison of several mpeg-4 codecs, and they also include vp3. (Be warned, it's a very big web page, due to all of the image examples!) Not really all that informative, but I thought somebody might be interested in hearing about it. *** On2 VP3 3.2.5.0 Positive: extreme low bitrate

Google to Open-source VP8 for HTML5 Video
"Google will soon make its VP8 video codec open source, we?ve learned from multiple sources. The company is scheduled to officially announce the release at its Google I/O developers conference next month, a source with knowledge of the announcement said. And with that release, Mozilla ? maker of the Firefox browser ? and Google Chrome are expected to also announce support for HTML5 video

Where's TrueCast5?
Supposedly On2 transferred their Video Recorder and TrueCast5 streaming server into opensource along with VP3. Theora is obviously the VP3 project, and while I can find nothing on Xiph about it, the recorder source is offered on vp3.com; but I can find nothing on Xiph or vp3.com about what happened to Truecast5. I contacted On2 about whether TrueCast5 was really going to be open source, and they

Deallocation of buffers
I noticed that in the narrow band and wide band destroy functions only the main pointer is being freed. I think that it should be: void nb_decoder_destroy(void *state) { DecState *st; st=(DecState*)state; speex_free (st->inBuf); speex_free (st->excBuf); speex_free (st->innov); speex_free (st->interp_qlpc); speex_free (st->qlsp); speex_free

fir_mem_up filter question
In the fir_mem_up filter, the inner loop does a mac on the y0, y1, y2, y3 variables. What is the range of values of those variables? I would like to move the SHR 1 outside the loop after the mac has been done. Will this result in a 32 bit overflow of the y0, y2, y2 and y3 variables? -Fritz On2 Technologies, Inc. http://www.on2.com

theora spec
can anyone confirm that, unlike VP3, Theora in fact decodes images right-side-up? (VP3 managed to turn everything upside down on encode and reverse it on decode) The tests I'm doing indicate that Theora doesn't reverse the image -- the first coefficients encoded correspond to the upper-left corner of the frame. ___ Dan Miller (++,) Founder, On2 Technologies --- >8 ---- List
