Participate in listening tests
You know it's good; I know it's good. I'm talking about Vorbis at 128 as it currently is in CVS. Please participate in a group listening test of various formats to show how Vorbis 128 has improved since RC2. I have prepared three sample music clips comparing Liquid AAC, MPC, pre-RC3 Vorbis, Lame, Xing, and WMA8, similar to the first test. Except I believe that this time Vorbis

new MS codecs
I thought this might be interesting to you, it's an extract from the latest streaming media newsletter, I was intrested to note that MS are claiming cd quality audio at 48kbps whichi is obviously very low, I didn't think much of it at first because nobody uses MS codecs for audio anyway! However (a bit I missed off this quote by the look of it) I then read mention of portable audio players

HD WMV9 videos for download...
Came across this page... intended to showcase the high-end capabilities of WMV9... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/ContentShowcase.aspx Just thought some people might be interested in it to make some comparisons... and it's also probably some of the highest quality sample material i've found on the net... so it's also useful for me to use as

Encoding or Playback problem?
Hi all, Have trouble encoding / playing back OGG using WinAmp + plugin. I encoded the files from .WAV with Ogg drop RC2. Seems to be ok. When I try and play them back though I get very very weird sound effects (some kind of "wobbling", some bass frequencies that are usually in the background seem to get more emphasised and they seem to have some kind of strange echo / reverb to it

MP3pro
So it looks like the Frauenhoffer boys are issuing an updated format -- MP3pro. They claim that it will give 128kbps/MP3 quality in 64kbps. I'm interested to see what others think of this. I'm also curious: I've seen others on the list say that Ogg/Vorbis' sound quality is "better" than MP3. Can this be quantified (or is this already on a web page somewhere)? I kinda

wineconsole blanking
Hi! I got a small problem with wineconsole (ncurses backend). I'am testing a commandline application (WM8EUTIL.exe aka Windows Media Encoder 8)) only, so I have no X running here, using ttydrv. But if I execute winconsole $ wineconsole .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Windows\ Media\ Components/Tools/WM8EUTIL.exe the commandline options for this tool are shown, but the console is blanked

Ogg Traffic for October 30, 2001
Bear with the text-based format for a bit. I'll make it nicer over time, but for now it's just a lynx -dump of the html one. As always you can find these at http://www.vorbis.com/ot/ and http://www.vorbis.com/ot/latest.html for the latest one. ---- Ogg Traffic for Tuesday, October 30, 2001 Jack Moffitt <[1]jack@xiph.org>

iRiver iFP-790 and its Ogg Vorbis support
Does anyone have the iRiver iFP-790 player (or maybe any other one of their iFP-7xx series)? I bought this player very recently, and I have been having problems with Ogg Vorbis playback. It skips so much that you only hear music 20% of the time. Is my unit defective or does the player really have problems with ogg vorbis? I think mine even chokes on wma's encoded at standard settings. Any

7.1 FLAC...But hao?
I know I've read about it under the FAQ and other various forums a dozen times, FLAC is able to encode up to 8 channels. But has anyone actually tried to do this? I ran across this nifty 7.1 wav sample courtesy of Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/howto/articles/Multichannel.aspx#link6 For some reason the channel mask was incorrectly set to 0x3f, so I manually changed

Change Station Name
Hello. I am new to this forum and relatively new to Icecast. I have set up and Icecast broadcast from my computer using Winamp as the playlist and the SAM Encoders to encode to WMA. The broadcast is running perfectly. The only issue is when I create an ASX file that links to my broadcast, it shows my IP address as the title of the broadcast. What do I need to do to change this to a name of my

live broadcast + WMA
Hi All, I have two questions. I have an icecast2 server installed, and I need to set up a Linux-based computer that sends a church's programs to the icecast server. (Both worship and teaching.) What application do you suggest? It would be really pleasing if I wouldn't need X11 to use the software, and it would display (with charactergraphics) the current signal level. The signal

More on CD anti-copying techniques
Some CDs will include all the songs encoded with Windows Media, removing the the need for ripping. Sounds like it has the potential to stomp out competition from other formats such as MP3 & OGG. http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-201-7320279-0.html --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a

trying to get better ogg quality for this clip
hi folks, in my (unlucky) first test of ogg vs other encoders, i found a case where wma and mp3pro sound much better than ogg at 64k. can anyone suggest a setting that i haven't tried yet that can rival the wma and mp3pro samples at 64k? it's the "gravel effect" that is troublesome. the part in question is the first 15 seconds of this wave file:
