Are AMDs preferable? [was: Choosing a processor]
Hi again,
On a related not, I think I read in the mailing-list archives that the
Pentium III wasn't "ideal" for .ogg operations; are AMD's processors more
appropriate/do they perform better?
Thanks,
Joane

Choosing a processor
Hello!
I am about to buy a new computer, and because encoding/decoding .ogg files
is the most processor intensive thing I intend to regularly do, I would like
to know which is the "recommended" processor for real-time encoding (I
record my favourite radio shows).
TIA!
Bye,
Joane Lispton
PS: I receive the FM radio stations through my cable (the one which brings
me cable TV),

AW: Are AMDs preferable? [was: Choosing a processor]
Hi Joane,
I think AMDs are 'preferable' of cost/'performance unit'. For standard
applications you will have to compare a Duron-900 to a P-III-933; and AMDs
will perform much better when it comes to number crunching. And now -- have
a look at the prices...!
I wouldn't buy any Intel chip today... this may be a 'European' habit, but I
think it isn't / shouldn't

AW: Choosing a processor
Hi,
if it comes to mp3... my 'old' Duron-700 delivers a rip-and-encode
performance six (6!) times faster then 'single speed' (bladeEnc 0.94.2). So
take the cheapest Duron box available, and you will be happy, for real small
money.
So long

TE410 - 3.3v?
I just noticed that the new TE410 only supports 3.3v PCI. How do you know
if it will work in your machine? It's not something commonly listed in your
motherboard specs....
I was thinking about getting one for an Athlon 750 that is a spare box I'm
doing testing on... (Original SlotA)

Migrating Asterisk
Hello All,
My asterisk installation has now been running for over two months
without a hitch, and I've decided it's time to move things around a bit.
It's currently installed on a 2.7GHz Celeron under RH9 installed on a
10GB "leftover" drive. Thanks to the strange marketing method called
"Mail-In-Rebate", I have a fresh 160GB drive ($50), and I'm itching to

Need AMD debugging help
To all who have an AMD + Windows based PC:
I have gotten a few similar bug reports about encoding
errors with FLAC. The common features are:
- Repeatedly encoding the same file with verify will have
verify errors some of the time (looks like aroung 50%) and
the verify errors will occur in different places each time.
- This is happening on AMD PCs running Windows. More reports

Really high load average. Config problem?
helo
I am running samba on an 800 Duron / 640MB PC2100 DDR Ram / 40 GB IBM Deskstar with slackware 8 / 2.2.17 Optimized for Duron.
Whenever I copy files to the server, my load average gets to be about 6.0-8.0! On the 700 Duron we have at the office where I work, (same specs except it has 768MB of SDRAM and a RAID Array). Would the reason my box runs so slow be because its swap drive and the

Linux router performance
Hi,
I wonder about the performance of a Linux box used as router (I guest I''m
not the first :). Althought I know it mainly depends on the hardware, I''m
trying to find some references on the topic or comparations with other
routing solutions (FreeBSD box used as router, Cisco, etc). For example,

Call terminated after 60 seconds
Hello,
I switched from my PSTN provider to a voip provider. (Voicedata in
the Netherlands)
>From the moment i switched all inbound calls are terminated after
aproximatly 1 minute.
The provider tells me it's not their issue since I have no other
configuration than all their other users.
What can I do.
I removed all asterisk functionality by forwarding the inboud call

IAX & CallerID
Hi All
Apologises if this has been disussed and I missed it.
My SetUp
I have a sip phone registered to an asterisk box (a1) in one location 1.
This phone dials an extension which is in another location, so a1 passes the call via IAX to the other asterisk (a2) in location 2 which then dials the local phone.
My Problem
The caller ID setup in the sip.conf for the phone registered to a1 is not

Which g729 codec to download for a P4?
Sorry for being a bit of a newbie here but I find the
docs or README for downloading the G.729 codec from Digium
are not as detailed as I would like or just don't really
break down the different versions to a point that I am clear
on which one to grab.
The choices for 32bit are:

Asterisk 1.2.6, VMWare, & Playback/Background GSM prompts
I've spent the past week experimenting with Asterisk@Home 2.6, and
then Asterisk 1.2.6 individually, on VMWare Workstation 5.5. I have an
entirely IP (hard & soft)phone setup (IAX and SIP) so I have no
requirements to support any Digium PCI cards, etc.
All in Asterisk works extremely well except for one thing: Playback of
sounds (GSM format) such as an ivr greetings, sound terrible.

ultra-cheap asterisk box
hi all
what about this...
I just put together a box on a web shop (komplett.no) that will cost me
NOK ~1850 (? 216) plus a small ?50 drive and cables, so say ?300. This
consists of a cheap MB with a duron 1400, 256MB SDRAM and two HFC-PCI
cards (if capijod will finish off the zaptel-driver soon). This is all
in a cheap PC case.
What do you think? Should this be doable? as a product? With only IP
