Patent troubles...
Hi everyone.
Reading all this posts about patent issues, I thought of something:
if, by some wild chance FhG (or some other audio company) manages
to prove in court that vorbis is breaking their patent rights, you could
do something like LAME developers did: release only source code and
let people do the compiling so that only users that are living in countries
where patents on algorithms are

The rates are in arbitration, and I doubt they will come out anywhere
near that amount. It just isn't feasible, even for large companies.

newby problem - concatenate lists
Hi,
a very basic question:
What ist the easiest way in R to concatenate two lists of vectors?
E.g, I have
x<-list(c(1,2))
y<-list(c(3,4))
and I want to receive
list(c(1,2),c(3,4))
thank you!

maps and data for german federal states
dear R-tists,
i want to graph information for the German Federal States (Bundeslaender) using the maps package. unfortunately there is no maps for the German Bundeslaender.
does anyone have an idea / a source where to get map data that can be used in the maps package that graphs structures below the country level.
in the long run it would also be interesting to integrate Swiss Cantons and

performance question
Hi,
I am about to write functions for multivariate kernel densitiy estimation
with mixed categorical and continuous date (accoring to Jeff Racine and Qi
Li), and the leave-one-out window esitmation needs a lot of computation.
I am now optimizing the code performance and therefore fhe following
questions:
As R uses call-by-value for functions, is it computational expensive to pass
large matrices

Not a stupid question. There's three considerations.
1. This project has around fifty broadcasters. It has been running for
3.5 years, and whilst some have moved to using plugins like SAM which

problems with connecting to a share
Hi,
I've the following problem.
samba 2.0.3 runs on a sun.
The security is server. The PDC is a NT-machine.
Sometimes when users try to connect to a share they get
the answer the password is incorrect. After a restart of
smbd all works fine.
Has anybody an idea????

Fraunhoffer claims patents on other formats
Here in the uk, to get a patent on anything, you have
to prove that the patent is not obvious and that there
is no prior art.
If there is prior art, then a patent cannot be given,
this is why people patenting stuff have to keep it a
secret until they actually have the patent, otherwise
it is considered to have been released into the public
domain.
Once something is in the public domain, nobody

patents and separate entropy coding
Hi everyone,
first of all, I searched through the archives for any posts resembling
this, I didn't read all posts about the patents so if this has been
suggested before I apologise.
I read in an article on C|Net (I think, it was linked from Slashdot
anyway) that Thompson are threatening to sue you if Ogg Vorbis becomes a
success. Which is evil, and I'm also mad at them because they never

SIP, NAT & Asterisk
Hi all,
--------
beacause I am a newbie in the asterisk ralm and the existing documentation
could not satisfy I'd like to ask you some Questions:
1. Does somewhere in the Internet exist additional documentations for asterisk
configuration ?
2. Does Asterisk work as a standard SIP Proxy ?
3. I am just installing a Asterisk PBX in our institute and additionally I
purchased some ot the Snom

Song
Hi there!
I'd like to make a test. There's a song that has very audible
artifacts when encoded using many MP3 encoders. Even if
you use 160 Kbps bitrate. The song is: Lara Fabian - Love by Grace.
The highest frequencies seems to be cut off when using Xing,
Lame or even Fhg!
I don't have that CD, but I'd like to know (or hear) how that
song would sound when encoded using Vorbis.

Encoders
Hi There,
The discussion about speex triggered the following question:
Is there a way to use other encoders, to stream with icecast / oddcast.
Is there an format of witch the encoder shoul be standarized to (ACM or
something like that), if so would it be possible to use open license
encoders and commercail encoders with this. like FHG mp3, mp3pro, speex and
so on.

SIP / IAX over satellite
Hi all,

I tried to use * over satellite, but all my effort did not succeed.
The Asterisk is behind the VSAT and is resposibel for alle the SIP
clients in a field location.
The clients are notebooks and PDA's running SJPhoen for Windows and
PocketPC. Unfortunately
I could not find any Linux Client wich worked satisfying. SJ LAbs

authentication problems samba -> PDC
Hi,
I have a samba installation on a sun E250. It works in
servermodus to authenticate users with a Windows-PDC.
Now I've the problem when a user connects to a networkdrive
on the sun, sometimes it works, but sometimes it fails.
then he would ask to input his password again and after 3
times his account is deactivated on the PDC.
in the logfile from the pdc I see during a connect
