ESS with Xemacs? [vs. Emacs, slightly off topic]
I decided to try out Xemacs instead of Emacs in Linux (RH 7.2).
After doing lots of configuration of Xemacs, I finally discovered
a major problem.
With Emacs, when I use R, I start Emacs twice (at least), in
different viewports, once as
emacs -f R
and once as
emacs myfile.R
Then I try commands in the first one, and, when they work (which
isn't very often), I cut the command with C-w,

XEmacs vs. GNU Emacs?
As a user of only R, I don't use much of the potential of ESS and Emacs.
Without entering a religious feud, is there any reason I should use XEmacs
rather than my current GNU Emacs?
(I looked on the XEmacs site, but I didn't understand the programming
issues they were talking about (over my head).)

ess in Windows (newbie Q)
I'm a rank beginner with R, and I'm stumped at how to get it to work
with Xemacs under Windows XP. I'm afraid there are some VERY basic
questions I have here. Yes, I did read
http://ess.r-project.org/Manual/readme.html.
Both R and Xemacs are installed and working. The current ess files are
installed in a subdirectory of my Xemacs directory. I added the R bin
directory to my

Installation of R, Sweave, ESS and [X]Emacs on Windows?
I'm trying to get R, Sweave, ESS and XEmacs or emacs all installed and
working together on my Windows XP Pro system. I've got R 2.6.0 working
just fine, installed from the R Windows installer. I also have
CYGWIN_NT-5.1 with XEmacs 21.4 working okay. Can anyone point me to any
documentation on how to bring these together so that R code typed in
Xemacs can be run in R? I found the ESS

[OT] emacs / xemacs for unix without compile
Dear All,
Is there a emacs/xemacs for unix without compiling it? If it is
possible, I prefer something that I can use immediately after putting
it on the unix server.
Is it possible or am I too stupid to ask this kind of question?
Thanks for your insight!

and [ESS] Starting ESS
Dear R People:
I have finally seen the error of my ways and have decided to use ESS for R
and S + stuff.
However, I have a question right from the beginning. I'm somewhat confused
by the installation instructions.
Do I install XEMACS or ESS first, please?
Windows XP
R Version 2.0.1
(S + 6.2)
Thanks so much!

r editors
Hi ,
I am programming on a windows system and have problems
using notepad which is my main editor. Each time I try
to open the editor from the R IDE, R crashes.
So I always have to copy my codes from notepad and
paste in R to run them.
CAn someone tell me if I am doing anything wrong or is
there a better editor(freeware) which I could get.
thanks

r-mode (ESS/XEmacs)
Hello,
please excuse me if this is not the appropriate
mailing list, but I'll give it a try!
I recently switched from using Emacs 20.7.1 to
XEmacs 21.4, both on cygwin / MS W2K.
On Emacs the ESS 5.1.17 was working well, but
now, when calling R from within XEmacs,
it first asks for the working directory,
then says "R process is not running".
The ESS buffer holds the

ESS 5.1.19 w/Xemacs 21.4.6
Probably wrong group for this, but a quick question. I've just switched
from emacs to Xemacs. In reinstalling ESS 5.1.19 I keep getting the
following error when loading Xemacs:
"Error in init file: Symbol's function definition is void: w32-using-nt"
I've debugged the ess-site.el file, which is where the error originates
from. The line causing the difficulty is:

Working comfortably with (X)Emacs + Sweave
Dear List,
I am trying to become more familiar with Sweave at the moment, beacuse
I am convinced that it will eventually make my life easier. However,
I have not found anything relevant in the mail archives about the
following problem.
Both the article in R-News and the Sweave FAQ suggest that Emacs would
be a great development environment for working with Sweave. So far, it
doesn't seem to

emacs and R
At the suggestion of many people, I have installed emacs on my linux (Fedora 8.0) computer with the intention of using emacs as window interface to R (2.6.0). I have gone though the emacs tutorial and don't see any information about how I should use emacs to run R. Can anyone suggest a document that I might read? In the past I have used R on a Windows XP system and used the built-in windowing

beginner questions: objects and scripts
hi,
I got some questions on using R,
1. How do I check and edit definition of an object?
for example,
>x <- 1:100
then after a while I want to check how x is defined.
list(x) or whatever functions I know only list its
content, but I want to see its definition, without
scrolling up and down, and edit it like "fixing" a
function.
2. How to save my work in current session as a

R-beta: X/Emacs and R in Linux
Sorry if this is a redundent question but I searched the archives and although I found a
couple of similar questions I saw no responses. I am running in Linux and when I try to
invoke R from either XEmacs or Emacs via 'M-x R' I get an error message which basically says
that Emacs doesn't understand the command. What do I need to do so that X/Emacs will invoke R
when I type 'M-x

Latex editor recommendations
This question is not oriented towards R, but is posted here because I
have the impression that there are at least some Latex users among the
contributors. The question is: What editors for Latex are to be
recommended? I have located one:
http://www.latexeditor.org/
What other alternatives are there? I am (for the most part) using
Windows XP.
