several bugs (PR#918) lists and matrices
### I got bit again by the same bugs I wrote about a year ago. ### The bugs are related to matrices and arrays of lists. ### 1. There is a clear inconsistency in how R handles two ### functionally equivalent statements. ### array() is able to take a list and create a matrix. ### matrix() is unable to create that matrix. > vector("list", 2) [[1]] NULL [[2]] NULL >

uninstal rw1030 (Win9*)
Hi all, I installed rw1031 but not uninstalled rw1030 just to make sure everything was working normally with the new version. After few weeks, I'm ready to uninstal rw1030. My question is: should I use the rw1030 unins00.exe program or could this program damage the rw1031 inatallation (perhaps modifies the registry...) ? Perhaps should I just delete the rw1030 directory? Thanks Dr.

ESS assigns .Last.value to the wrong place in R
I repeat my emails of 11/15/01 and 2/26/02, since it looks like this ESS bug is still not fixed in ESS 5.1.23, and I think some resolution is needed. When help() is invoked, ESS makes a copy of .Last.value in the .GlobalEnv, which is *not* where R normally stores it (R stores it in package:base). When this copy becomes stale it leads to wrong answers. The bug is in essd-r.el, lines 63-64:

question on latticeParseFormula (PR#2602)
This feels like inconsistent behavior. latticeParseFormula works the way I anticipated for factor, but not for ordered. I want the behavior I see with tmp2, but not with tmp. My next step is to use the right.name to isolate the tmp2[,c("a","b")] columns. tmp <- data.frame(y=(1:12)+.1, a=factor(rep(1:3,4)), b=ordered(rep(1:4,

The object argument of NextMethod.
My question is when the object argument of NexthMethod be used? In the following example, weather object argument is used will not affects the result. ### foo=function(x) {UseMethod("foo")} foo.cls1=function(x) { x=x+1;class(x)<-"ncls" NextMethod() } foo.ncls=function(x) { cat("ncls\n") } foo.cls2=function(x) { cat("cls2\n");print(x) }

couldn't find function "print.tframe"
I have an object with an attribute "tframe" for which there is a generic method print.tframe and also a method print.tframe.default defined in a library. However, when I use attributes(object) I get the message $tframe Error: couldn't find function "print.tframe" It's as if <primitive: attributes> is not looking through the search list? Any suggestions?

Importing STATA files
I'm an R novice who is struggling with the importation STATA files into R. I've loaded "foreign" and tried the example based on the Swiss file, which works fine. I then placed a STATA file, auto6.dta, in my working directory, which is "C:\Program Files\R\rw1030\library\base\data". The following is what happened: > library(foreign) > read.dta(auto6) Error in

install.packages (PR#998)
The packages feature of Rgui is great! However it looks the directory structure was changed for http://cran.r-project.org/bin/windows/contrib/, such that some the packages are now under /rw1030 (e.g., VR) and are not found by install.packages(). Thus the error message: trying URL `http://cran.r-project.org/bin/windows/contrib/VR.zip' Error in download.file(url, destfile, method, mode =

optim: problem with additional arguments (PR#493)
The R function "optim" fails when a function requires additional arguments, if the option "hessian=T" is specified. I am using R Version 1.0.0 on Windows 98. Here is an example of the Rosenbrock Banana function from the optim help example, with the function and gradient modified to take an additonal argument. Note that the call to optim works fine unless a hessian is

R (D)COM automation server for windows, type mismatch?
Hello! I just started experimenting with the (D)COM automation server for R (server version 0.99, R 1.3.0, Win NT) All the precompiled sample executables work. When I write programms myself, in this case Visual Basic for Applications within Excel, I can attach a graphics device but not a character device. The controls I added to the form by means of the 'toolbox' both originate from
