0.0.36 tagged and released
Hi
I''m pleased to let you know that wxruby2-preview 0.0.36 is now available
on Rubyforge. Binary gems to follow...
To check out a clean copy from SVN and build from source:
svn co svn://rubyforge.org/var/svn/wxruby/tags/wxruby2/0.0.36
cd 0.0.36
rake gem WXRUBY_VERSION=0.0.36
From my reading of SVN docs it''s probably wise for developers to
checkout anonymously as a bit of

wxruby2 alpha status
Hi all,
How soon can we do our alpha (binary gem) release?
1. I would like to get the samples working a bit better, but am ok
simply documenting most of the current problems. Do the samples crash
every few minutes for other people? Or is it just me? I would like to
have a copyright/license comment at the top of every sample file before
the alpha release.
2. I would like to receive and merge a

Listbook patch
Small patch to correct spelling of lemonade. Should ask Sean if he
really wanted it to be lemonaid. If not, here''s the patch.
On another note... This sample works! Kudos. It is odd that the
textbox doesn''t scroll. I suppose I may patch that, too.

samples
What do you think about adding a shebang line to the samples so they can
be launched on linux/mac like you can on windows?

New inheritance
A good number of the samples I have tested are outright or subtly broken
on Windows now. I''m trying to determine what the cause is. Mostly it
seems related to the initialize function not being created when it
should be.
Case in point: ClientDC.i
The caret example won''t work at all because initialize isn''t declared
any longer. If you comment out the import

TreeCtrl update
The previous TreeCtrl.i was very messy and just plain wrong, for
instance it had GetFirstChild as depreciated when in fact only 1
version of it was depreciated not both.
I changed GetFirstChild and GetNextChild to return an array of values
to match the wxPython and wxPerl usage.
I also noticed that wxTreeCtrl is inherited from wxControl on Windows
and wxScrolledWindow on everything else so I #if

doc generator now in CVS
Hi
Just a quick note to let you know that the Textile doc generation stuff
is now in CVS. There is a moderate amount of documentation in
rake/rakedoc.rb in case you feel like generating your own local copy.
The only prerequisite is the Ruby ''redcloth'' library.
There''s also some info in doc/lib which might be some help if you want
to tweak the output.
cheers

patch for Icon
I just checked out a fresh copy and had to tweak wxIcon.h to get it to
compile on Mac OS X and windows. The problem is with:
wxIcon(const wxString& filename,
wxBitmapType type = wxBITMAP_TYPE_XPM,
int desiredWidth=-1, int desiredHeight=-1);
that signature is only used on GTK on other systems it is:
wxIcon(const wxString& name,

Official name change to wxruby2
The CVS module has been renamed from wxruby-swig to wxruby2, and I have
checked in the related changes to reflect the name change. Anyone with a
CVS tree will need to re-checkout from CVS because of the module name
change.
There is now a wx.rb in the lib/ directory, which loads the wxruby2
shared library that gets built.
I have tagged this as 0.0.22.
Next steps:

Rake patch
This patch fixes the following:
- You can now use rake to build on Windows.
- You can now use rake install to install the lib, no more extconf.rb
needed! This should be cross platform, I took some code for installing
from the Makefile that extconf.rb generated as a basis. I have tested
it on OS X and will test tomorrow on Windows, I am 95% it will work
cross platform.
- I did get Windows

Grid.GetTextExtent
Wow. Look what SWIG does to GetTextExtent in Grid.cpp:
void SwigDirector_wxGrid::GetTextExtent(wxString const &string, int *x,
int *y, int *descent, int *externalLeading, wxFont const *font) const {
...
if (swig_get_up()) {
wxWindow::GetTextExtent(string,x,y,descent,externalLeading,font);
return;
}
obj0 = rb_str_new2((const char *)(&string)->mb_str());

install problem
I''m having a problem getting wxruby2-preview working on my Linux system.
I loaded wxruby via a gem install and that seemed to go OK. Added
RUBYOPT=-rubygems to /etc/environment file and set it at the command
prompt and still I get the following when I try to run minimal.rb:
[root@www minimal]# ruby -rubygems minimal.rb

I will be unsubscribing
Greetings all,
As you have noticed, I have been largely absent from the wxruby team for
quite a while now. Fortunately, others have taken charge and continued
to move wxruby forward. It''s still a great project, but I just can''t
participate right now.
I will be unsubscribing from both the dev and users mailing lists in a
couple days. Because I will be packing for a long trip

next steps - public alpha?
Seems the gems and tarball have been downloaded a bit with no reported
problems. I suggest we do an alpha release incorporating Roy''s useful
recent fixes and announce it more publicly e.g. on the mailing list.
It''s not perfect, but again we have made a lot of progress since late
July and we should build on it; it was our dev goal. I now personally
have to put some effort

Patch for Unicode on windows
This patch makes Unicode the default build for windows. You can
override the default by setting a WXRUBY_NO_UNICODE environment variable.

Patch files to implement AcceptFocus
These files add the virtual function AcceptFocus that was missing from
wxWindow.h. In order to make things right I had to make sure it was
also declared in all the places where wxWindows also changes it. Also,
in wxTextCtrl on Windows GetDefaultAttributes needs to be redeclared. I
haven''t downloaded the Unix and Mac headers for 2.6.3 so I couldn''t see
if it also applies

Fix for non-centered windows
Two patches here:
First one removes virtual from a function that shouldn''t have been virtual.
Second one applies a typemap to catch GetRectFromChildWindow. For
reasons that are completely beyond me the standard ruby OUTPUT typemaps
don''t define directorargouts. I will take a stab at patching SWIG''s
default typemaps someday so we get this fixed for free on all our

Volunteer requested: Implement SplitterWindow
About a year ago (ouch!), Robert Carlin submitted a ported version of
the wxPython demo/sample. I hoped to include it in wxruby2, but it
relies on SplitterWindow, which isn''t in wxruby2 yet.
I tried to implement SplitterWindow myself, but got such strange results
that I''m thinking I did something wrong. Even though the generated C++
code specified a variable number of
