RFC: Moving mailing lists soon
I''m about to leave town for three weeks and my home server keeps
rebooting. It''s my mail server, unfortunately, so there''s a good
chance you won''t get this. :/
Anyway, I''ve been meaning to do this for ages and ages, and it''s time
to finally do so. I need to move all of the Puppet lists to a public,
non-me provider, someone who has

Seattle Meetup?
Hi all,
It looks like I''ll be in Seattle on Sunday, September 16th through
Tuesday the 18th, and I''d like to have Puppet Meetup either Sunday or
Monday night.
On Adam''s recommendation, I''ll be staying at the Queen Anne Inn, so
something near there would be best. Hopefully Adam or Blake can do
the actual organization. :)
Any takers?

"not authorized" when testing mongrel support
Hi,
We''re trying to follow the instructions at
http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/UsingMongrel
(Just using a single puppetmaster/mongrel instance and plain mod_proxy for now,
instead of balancer one)
We got past the "Server is not a class" error by modifying mongrel.rb
We also kind-of got past the:
/opt/bin/puppetmasterd:293: undefined method `daemonize'' for

Puppet/webrick benchmark
We haven''t been able to use mongrel for testing yet, but in order not to
waste time, we did some performance testing with 1, 2 and 4
puppetmasterd/webrick processes.
Attached is an HTML page (ripped from our wiki - not pretty, but
reasonably readable) which describes the method and results.
If someone feels like making some nice graphs, that would be great. If
not, I''ll try to

puppet standlone hanging when ran via init.d
Hi,
I''ve just changed my debian preseed configuration to install the debian
unstable package of puppet v0.22.1. As part of the preseed I have a late
command that clobbers the /etc/init.d/puppet file into using the puppet
standalone program and not the puppetd (as this is what I''m using). Since
the upgrade to 0.22.1 every boot hangs during the initd. Going into
standalone mode

Trailing commas [best practice survey]
I''m sure everyone has read and committed the Puppet Best Practice to memory
by now (I joke). One of the things I''ve written in there deals with
trailing commas, which I adopted from the way I used to do multiline in
Perl, but I''ve noticed that most people don''t tend to do that in Puppet.
Should I revise this or should we all start using the trailing commas?

Strangeness with a definition
I''m having problems with a definition not being found.
I get the following error when running puppetd -vt:
err: Could not find type "manual_apt_get_update" in file
/etc/puppet/manifests/definitions/apt_misc.pp at line 22
The definition is present for sure. Can anyone spot a problem with the
code below?
define manual_apt_get_update {

What to call a class: Manifest? Configuration? ResourceContainer?
Hi all,
I''ve got a new class in the current code, which I''ve been calling
Configuration but Matt reasonably thinks is horrible.
He is recommending the name Manifest, and I figured I''d see what
others thought.
The point of the class is to function as a resource container -- it
keeps a reference to all of the resources we''re managing, and knows
how to

Custom reports in puppet
Does any one know or whether have someone done custom reports in puppet.
Which will show the status of the servers, disk, cpu, load, pkg list,
configs/files edited via puppet, how often a config file is updated,
etc..

Ruby Gems and Rails
Hi,
I think this has been discussed previously on the list, so apologies if
I''m covering old ground but I''ve been using puppet to manage a few Rails
applications which have dependencies on quite a few gems, so it''s
getting to be a bit of an onerous task to manage them. It looks like
the command line interface to gems doesn''t really support automated

multiple files with same attributes
I''m almost afraid to ask because this probably sticks out
like a sore thumb on the wiki somewhere, and I''m just not
seeing it.
But I have a bunch of files with the same owner/mode. Is
there a way to somehow collapse these, so that all I repeat
is the file name?
Example:
file {
"/opt/test/1":
owner => "jtan",
group =>

Signing certificates with mongrel+apache puppetmaster
Hi,
Is there a way to have puppetmaster sign new clients'' certificates when
using apache+mongrel for serving, without having a separate puppetmaster
instance running webrick on a different port/IP?
I guess this does not work out of the box because apache is told to do
the verification very early in the connection process, at which point it
does not yet know that the client is going to

puppet seems to be restarting itself very often
I turned on reporting the other day and I''m seeing alot of these when puppet
runs. Especially during times when nothing is going on (middle of the night
etc)

It''s also quite odd that puppet when it runs it thinks

Please test export/collect from svn
For those of you out there using export/collect (which we really need
to come up with a better name for...), can you test the current SVN
code?
I''m mostly wondering if the performance is any better. To use it,
you''ll have to remove your current database, since the database
schema is significantly changed.
I''m getting what looks like an additional 25% reduction

Type development for the rest of us
Since I had my type development epiphany a couple of days ago, I''ve decided
to write down my understanding of developing simple types, at
http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/PracticalTypes.
I''d appreciate comments from people who already know how to develop types as
to correctness, and also comments from people who are new to type
development about whether it''s a

Puppet Best Practice
Hello everyone,
A long time ago, I posted the Stanford Best Practices and I''ve gone through
and updated it today. I''d like to have people go through it and see if we
can strip out some Stanford specific stuff and tag this as an official best
practice. I think an official best practice will be important as more and
more people consider making shareable modules, etc (mostly

Disabling 'node_name = facter' setting
I''m having a heck of a time trying to fix #1178, which is a problem
related to inconsistent node names, and it all stems from the
''node_name'' setting.
In the default setup, your certificate gets created with your host''s
fully qualified node name, and Puppet uses the value from the
certificate for everything.
In addition, there''s a setting,

Boolean expressions
I''m trying to write a wrapper definition for the file type to make it a
bit smarter. I have a basic version working fairly well:
define xfile($owner = root, $group = root, $mode = 644, $source,
$backup = main, $recurse = false, $ensure = file) {
file { $name:
mode => $mode,
owner => $owner,
group => $group,
backup => $backup,

FOSDEM?
Hi all,
A couple of people are trying to convince me to come to FOSDEM in
Belgium at the end of February. I''m a bit hesitant because I''ve been
doing so much travel, but LinuxConf.au was a great experience and
seems to have really helped get exposure to Puppet. There seems to
be a pretty strong European contingent of Puppet users, and it''d be
great to meet
