Hi all, A couple of people are trying to convince me to come to FOSDEM in Belgium at the end of February. I''m a bit hesitant because I''ve been doing so much travel, but LinuxConf.au was a great experience and seems to have really helped get exposure to Puppet. There seems to be a pretty strong European contingent of Puppet users, and it''d be great to meet many of you in person. So, should I go to FOSDEM? Is it the best European conference for me to attend, or is there another better one? (Not that I''m restricted to only one conference a year, but it is a long trip.) If there''s enough interest, then I''ll make a point to get there (possibly with my wife, if she can take the time away from her PhD), especially if I can set up a presentation or two. If there are companies who would like to meet with me while I''m there and are within a reasonable train ride (FOSDEM is in Brussels), I''d be interested in that, too, since I don''t get to Europe as often as I''d like. I could plan on spending a week or two there if there is enough interest, although I might need some help on lodging if most of the time is spent meeting with businesses. The conference is in about a month, so feedback sooner is better. -- If a dog jumps onto your lap it is because he is fond of you; but if a cat does the same thing it is because your lap is warmer. -- Alfred North Whitehead --------------------------------------------------------------------- Luke Kanies | http://reductivelabs.com | http://madstop.com

I''ve been planning on attending for the last three years now, but every time something comes up (this year, my gf and I will probably be moving to our newly acquired house right around that time). I know many friends and colleagues go, though, and they really like it. Another event that just passed (last December), which is promising but very new, is T-DOSE. It''s in Eindhoven and will probably be held again around december. I hope they update their site by then :| -- Gegroet, Tim

If you do it, remember you’re only a two hour train ride from London on Eurostar... (assuming we don’t send anyone to FOSDEM to buy you a pint or three). Oh, that’s a fact: the Belgians reckon they have the best beer in the world (not a view I share incidentally). But might influence your decision a bit :) Gary PS The release of kermit will be swiftly followed by some packages for Solaris that should meet your needs, and the exacting standards of the Blastwave maintainers... gary.law@gmail.com _______________________________________________ Puppet-users mailing list Puppet-users@madstop.com https://mail.madstop.com/mailman/listinfo/puppet-users

However, I’m now distracted from the task of producing packages by the arrival of my very beautiful, brand new and as yet untitled new daughter. :) Will get the packages up to blastwave, and you, before the week is out thou’. all the best Gary gary.law@gmail.com _______________________________________________ Puppet-users mailing list Puppet-users@madstop.com https://mail.madstop.com/mailman/listinfo/puppet-users

I just got to spend some time with my 6 month old niece[1] last night, so I''ve got babies on the mind.> Will get the packages up to blastwave, and you, before the week is > out thou’. > all the bestCool. Not that I use Solaris... :) BTW, I think I just got another consulting contract, and if so I think I''ll be trying to go to FOSDEM after all, since I won''t be quite as concerned about money. Should I allot any time to spend with the Guardian? If so, when and where? 1 - http://flickr.com/photos/jeraviv/ -- What is the sound of Perl? Hi Luke, I will go for the 3th time now, so I thought I could share my experiences. - 2 years ago: O''Reilly, FSF, Debian, Gentoo, FreeBSD,... were there with a stand (T-shirts, books, cd''s, etc). Lots of talks (different concurrent tracks). It also serves as a meeting place for developers of different projects/distributions. The crowd is good and varied. Think that this is a free conference during the weekend, so people are not paid to be there! - Last year: same as year before (different talks of course), only that you see the economic crisis was getting on its last feet. More stands: I remember Google being there giving out gadgets ;). Suse was there with a stand + introducing AppArmor during a talk. Other stands: Mediawiki (Wikipedia), OpenGroupware,... There were also talks about RIFE and the Dojo Toolkit, so it is not just the Linux OS, but Open Source in general. Last year I ran into one of my teachers I had once, so I imagine you certainly reach the academic world (it is in the university of Brussels, one of the 3 main universities in Belgium). The talks are in English, and I know for a fact that there were people from Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands attending the conference, so it isn''t just a local thing. No idea if you can generate a lot of business/revenue in the short run. I hope this gives you a good insight, because I think there would certainly be interest in Puppet (well... I am interested ;)). Anyway, it looks like the rooms are already pretty well filled, but you never know.
