films on Desktops and roaming profiles
Hi, I'd like to ask you what do you limit Desktops syncing in case users put large files on them, e.g. films. Downloading / uploading such large files can generate lots of unnecessary traffic. Is there any kind of filtering possible ? Other solutions ? Cheers, -- Michal Kurowski perl -e '$_=q#: 13_2: 12/o{>: 8_4) (_4: 6/2^-2; 3;-2^\2: 5/7\_/\7: 12m m::#;

userpassword -> ntPassword conversion
Hi, I'd like to convert a number of userpassword ("posixAccount", crypt-ed) and create a ldif to update my Ldap server database. I've seen smbtools scripts in Samba sources but it seems there no tool to do that in there. What should I use to accomplish this ? Cheers, -- Michal Kurowski <mkur@poczta.gazeta.pl>

linux/solaris/windows group management
Hi, My second question. Perhaps not strictly samba question but I guess many people in here are dealing with exactly the same stuff... I've got Ldap (Sun ONE aka iPlanet) Ldap server on a solaris9 box and samba (2.2.9, not quite willing to upgrade, no offense) on a linux box. Therefore my primary linux group is "users" (gid 100) and my primary solaris group is "other"

want to ban XP Home Edition
Just for sake of curiosity: Is that possible ? I'd like to support XP Pro *only* and to ban any other Windows OS (no 2000 server or 2003 server machines in here). Samba works in domain mode with Ldap backend. Cheers, -- Michal Kurowski perl -e '$_=q#: 13_2: 12/o{>: 8_4) (_4: 6/2^-2; 3;-2^\2: 5/7\_/\7: 12m m::#; y#:#\n#;s#(\D)(\d+)#$1x$2#ge;print'

Problem with clients that are inactive for some time
Hi, My config: samba 2.2.11 on linux 2.4.26, nss_ldap 215, glibc 2.2.3. Clients: XP Pro SP1. Domain style setup with Ldap server over ssl. The server is Sun DS 5.2. Users complain that sometimes (and not on all computers) they are unable to log in after some time (several hours) has passed since they were last accessed. They have to reboot them and the problem disappears. I enabled level 3

nmblib.c:send_udp
I've been having some odd problems with samba and it's libsmb/nmblib parts. It seems to be trying to transmit data to the .63 of my netblock, i.e. the IP of the machine would be 24.240.60.20, it'd be trying to transmit to 24.240.60.63. I've changed IPs about 15 times since, and it does it to each different block I change to. If the IP of the local machine got changed to

authentication against win2k3 server
I've been trying to setup Samba to authenticate users against accounts existing on a Windows 2003 Server without any backwards capability. Ideally, this needs to be done without any changes to the Windows 2003 Server. Users will not be logging into the Samba shares at all. This is merely for authentication. I'm running FreeBSD 4.10-Relase #4 with Samba 3.0.8. This is my smb.conf file:

Finding the GID of AD groups on samba
Hi Folks: A couple weeks ago, the list helped me develop the way to find the UID of users on my AD system. At the time I did not think that it would be necessary to know the GID of the AD Groups, but I am hitting some snags where I need to change the group ownership of folders etc. I suspect that the necessary command is a variant of the getent command, but man getent has not yielded where I

current master browser = UNKNOWN / failing WINS test #1 on 3.0.23c
I am having trouble with one of my samba PDC's. It does not recognize itself as the domain master browser even though it is set to be so. I can not add machines to this domain and I suspect this is why. Has anybody seen this or know what causes it? Notice this: DOMAIN_ALBANY(3) current master browser = ALBANY_PDC DOMAIN_NYC(2) current master browser = NYC_PDC

why is my "nmbd" confused about network interfaces?
The only thing related to 'addresses' in my /etc/samba/smb.conf file is a "hosts allow": hosts allow = 192.168.3.0/24 127.1 I'm going to ignore the 'local hosts case, as if I solve the other, the localhost case may get solved by inference. I thought the 'hosts allow' would allow any host on the local 192.168.3.0/24 subnet. The hosts have no problems
