Try an ultra-simple smb.conf and see if the problem still occurs. By the
way, Red Hat has an .rpm for 2.0.5a on their website, not that I expect
that to have anything to do with your problem.

workgroup=whatever
netbios name=nameofyourserver
[homes]
read only=no
The preceding should work if you set encryption to what it is on the
client, set the workgroup to the same as your client, and set the netbios
name to the same as your server.
