Help a newbie (please!): Samba and WinXP in a non-PDC environment
Hi all... looking for some assistance with my first Samba setup.
The setup: On a small (five-computer, mixed Win2k and WinXP pro) LAN, I'd
like a share on my FreeBSD server to be available for storage. No printing,
no PDC, no individual user directories or password protection -- just a big
ol' slice of storage for everyone to access equally.
I've come close, (the share shows up

password problems
We installed Samba server on a Alphaserver 4000 and we are connecting with
a Win NT client
Our server name is "ALPHASERVER4000" our client name is "PC3"
we arrived to test 10 and problem is still alive.
We can see with the NT browser "ALPHASERVER4000" but if we double click on
it a password is requested.
We tried with Regedit with all this options.
Run regedt32.exe

Creating domain users - how?
The problem is - how do I do it? It seems to be such an easy question
but I've failed to find it in the documentation. (I'm trying to follow
"How to Configure Samba 2.2 as a Primary Domain Controller" which I was
pointed to by SWAT.) I'm guessing the solution's obvious, but if so, I
hope somebody can help easily.
I've used samba for a few years (so I'm not a

More Samba Questions
I have never setup a Samba server, and the recent thread here prompted to
get on this I need to migrate two XP machines from using iSCSI to Samba.
I thought the "+" preceding a username in the smb.conf file for a
share definition told Samba to use the unix username? Unless I actually
use swat to create and enable the user and take off the + it doesn't work.
Any ideas what swat does

help needed: connecting with similar windows-unix usernames?
Hello all samba'ers
I'm trying to configure samba for Windows (active-directory)
authentication, with every Windows-user having a similar unix username.
I've created the users in both sides but I couldn't configure the
smb.conf file (either with or without SWAT) to make it work.
I'm using XP clients with a Win2K3 as the domain server and Solaris 9 as
the samba server.

can't create user entries in smbpasswd
Hi all,
after installing samba 2.2.5 (on Solaris8 running NIS+) it is not
possible to create user entries in smbpasswd.
I generated the smbpasswd file by
# cat /dev/null | /samba/samba-2.2.5/source/script/mksmbpasswd.sh >
/usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd
-----
then tried to create user entry "dummy" in smbpasswd by
(user "dummy" exists under NIS+)
# smbpasswd -a dummy

Passwords issues with samba 2.0.6
In my pursuit of integrating samba password authentication with our own
stuff, I've been looking at ways on synchronizing the two. And here are
the two problems for which I hope to get either solution:
a) smbpasswd will not pass down spaces to whatever is called for
synchronization. Barely looking at the synchronization routine, it
scans as a string, which would skip anything after a space.

getting swat to run on Hewlit Packard HPUX 10.20
I've just downloaded and installed the SAMBA binaries for HPUX 10.20. I'm
been unsuccessful in getting swat to run though. I've made the correct
entries in the /etc/services file (swat 901/tcp) and in the /etc/inetd.conf
file (swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /opt/samba/bin/swat swat) and
have shutdown and restarted the inetd daemon. When I use Netscape and

SWAT and authentication
What's the deal with SWAT authentication? I have a Freebsd 4-Stable box
running SWAT from the Samba 2.0.7 port and I can log into SWAT as a
regular user (ie, not root but has a smbpasswd entry) and make any
changes I want to the smb.conf file -- which is 0644 root.wheel. I'm
presuming this is because my inetd.conf entry for SWAT has it running as
root as per the example.
Is this how

RE: SWAT not working, can't authenticate
Did you make sure localhost resolves? Also, depending on your
/etc/resolv.conf, you may have to fully qualify the host's name including
the DNS domain. I seem to rember having problems with this, and some
combination of using localhost or hostname.domain.edu or using the actual IP
address of the host cleared up the problem.

Trouble migrating from plain text to encrypted passwords
Hi,
I'm looking for some help to migrate from plain text to encrypted passwords.
I'm using smbpasswd for authentication on a FreeBSD 4.9 server with samba
2.2.8.
When we set up our server, we had Win95 clients with plain text passwords. As
we introduced Win98 clients, we just kept with the plain text passwords.
Now we are looking at XP clients and enctrypted passwords.
My understanding

me out. I'm using RedHat advanced server and a windows 2000. I created a

Using system users/passwords to authenticate
Hey all,
I am somewhat new to Samba, but the documentation that came with the Samba 2.0 hints that authenticating Samba users using the system user/password files is possible. The following is a quote from the smb.conf web page as viewed using the SWAT configuration server:
"Step 1: If the client has passed a username/password pair and that username/password pair is validated by the UNIX
