local admin permissions
We have implemented an NT domain with samba 3.0.4 PDC on Slackware 9.1 and Win XP Pro clients. Everything is working nicely except for one issue. I haven't used Windows for years, so possibly I just don't understand something basic about Windows XP security ... Having logged in (to the domain), users are unable to perform tasks such as update certain files on the local system, for example

Can't join domain - new machine name
I have just implemented an NT Domain using samba 3.0.4 on Slackware 9.1, a very simple LAN with 4 or 5 clients. Clients: Win XP Pro. Everything looks OK so far, apart from this issue: I create machine accounts for existing client machines using their existing names ... works fine, they can join domain. Except that we want to rename the existing machines using a new consistent format (client1,

samba 3.0.4 domain woes
G'day: Folks, I'm at my wits end trying to join a WIN XP Professional client to a samba 3.0.4 domain running on Slackware 9.1. I haven't used windows since Win 95 days and am not up to speed with it at all. Also, i've tried the O'Reilly Using Samba book (2nd edition), read the samba docs, and browsed the mailing lists but there is so much information I'm even more

Internal error with domain login
Hiya everyone. I guess this isn't something that causes much concern, since it doesn't happen very often. When I try to log in to a domain as a user that has an invalidated password (32 Xs) Samba gets an internal error. I haven't really had a hard look at why it might be doing that as yet, but I thought I'd make you aware of the problem and ask if anyone has had similar

pdbedit
I have a couple of questions about pdbedit. I am having trouble using pdbedit in shell scripts. First, on a freshly installed system with no-one in the tdbsam database, trying to add multiple machine accounts via a loop construct in a shell script fails with a message that the database can't be found/doesn't exist. I then added root manually just to get the system going, which solves

Newbie group mapping question
I'm wondering if, in a context where samba 3.0.4 is PDC for an NT domain with XP clients, it is necessary or at least normal practice to map most/all NT groups (eg Domain Admins, Domain Users) to unix groups? Also, I notice when I do 'net groupmap list' that there are not only Domain Admins, Domain Users and Domain Guests, but also plain Admins, Users and Guests. What is the

[newbie] Linux login to NT domain
Hi, I've been using samba for some time now on my linux laptop, although only scratching the surface of it's full capabilities. I basically use samba for printing and accessing our domain file servers. So, I know relatively little about the in-depth configuration of samba Every time I need to access a domain service I need to supply an authfile/usename/password to the

newbie question concerning samba 3.0 and nt domains
I'm very new to the use of samba, I have samba 3.0 configured and running on a slackware 9.1 machine. I have also configured and have running winbind, but I'm confused on how the domain permissions gets set on the samba shares. I have the smb.conf security = domain, and wbinfo successfully grabs the network username and groups but how do I configure the permissions for the NT users and

[Fwd: Re: What happened to this list?]
Interesting question. I'm not complaining, I find that the Linux/OSS world is in general amazingly helpful, and people do find answers on this list. However, I must say that several of my own questions here never got answered, and many others go unanswered. The samba team is doing a fantastic job, but yes, this list does seem short of people who have the time or expertise to provide answers.

Samba PDC problem - error_packet
Hi; I'heve got a strange problem with samba 3.0.4. It's configured as PDC, It functions joining a computer with w2k/XP to domain, logging-in, mapping disk. The problem appears by copying data to the mapped disk or to another resource of server. In windows the indicator or progress stays in one place, after same time a message appears "Network path can't be found" and in

hardlink bug in 2.6.4?
The background: I host one of the unofficial slackware mirrors & push to a high speed (unlisted) mirror that several other unofficials use for pulls. To save time/disk/bandwidth I use a custom script to hardlink the trees prior to pushing the updates to said unlisted mirror. The commandline (linewrap from hell, sorry): (note: username/password/hostname/modulename deliberately obfuscated)

Login process fails
Hi All. I'm trying to use the latest CVS source (downloaded 9.30am Friday, August 21 EST) with Win NT4.0 build 1381 SP3. When logging in to the Samba server I get the following on the NT box. STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000) The system has been shutdown. This occurs

Resolving DNS names to an IP in NT 4 domain
Hi I recently started working with somba on my Slackware box, and got it going with file sharing. However, I need a little more functionality out of it. I'll start with my situation, and what I need to do. I run a webserver on IIS 5.0 on a Win 2000 box. It is strictly a LAN webserver and only accessable from thos on the inside. People access from their browser via my Win 2000

Login with a NT 4.0 PDC
Hi all, I want to make a Samba Sever as amember of a Domain, using a Windows NT 4.0 as PDC. I have my smb.conf configured to do this, but users ca't connect on Samba useing the Windows NT account. Is it possible or I have to create them on a smbpasswd to make them login on it? I have a Samba Server 3.0.7 running under a Slackware Linux 10.0, with Kernel 2.6.8.1. I'm sending my smb.conf

Inactive smb mounts freeze linux 2.6.5 and samba 3.0.4
Hi! I am new to the list, but i've searched the archives to no avail. A few months ago, I installed linux 2.6 and samba 3. I use fstab to mount shares from a windows XP station. I have done this successfully for years using 2.4 and samba2. Mounting the remote shares work fine, for a while. After some inactivity or a reboot of the windows XP station, mounted volumes become unusable. Not in

accessing foreign AD users to NT domain
That is because.. Your not sending the DOMAIN\username but COMPUTER\username, so access denied. odd behaviour change (2.6.3 > 2.6.4pre3)
Synopsis: Prior to the 2.6.4pre versions, issuing 'rsync rsync://host/module/' behaved effectively as 'ls -l'. I've toyed with various options in an attempt to get an 'ls -l' style output, but to no avail. As I have a small handful of scripts that rely on this no-longer-functioning functionality, this could be considered a Bad Thing(TM). Following is an example of

Windows NT 4.0 Domain Login to samba server
I believe I read somewhere that samba can be a domain login server to NT4.0, however this support is still in the experimental stages(although it "does seem to work"). However I can't seem to get NT4 SP1 to take my domain name(KDC) as a valid domain because it complains that it "can't find primary domain controller."... How do I get around this difficulty? I
