smbtar question?
Hi all,
I want to move a filesystem off of my NT server over to my Network
Appliance NFS server to then be shared via Samba. I assume the easiest
way to accomplish this would be to use smbtar. Do I then
use smbtar to extract the tar file I create with smbtar, or, can I use
gnutar? Does it matter? Am I safer sticking with smbtar?
I'm guessing that since smbtar is a wrapper around

How to include system files with smbtar?
Hi,
I recently upgraded to 1.9.18p8, and noticed that smbtar no longer
automatically includes system files. I can't seem to find a way to include
the 'tarmode system' command in the smbtar shell script. If I add a -c
"tarmode system" to the $SMBCLIENT command line at the end of the smbtar
shell script, I get no tarred files at all.
Can anybody help me with this?

Hi all,
I just noticed a strange behavious of my smbclient which came up on
debugging BackupPC.
I have set up a AD Domain with an windows Server as DC. In this domain I
have a laptop running which I try to backup.
On the laptop I created a share called "C" and assigned access
permissions for the user called "backuppc".

Samba 3.0.11 won't compile on Solaris 8
Samba 3.0.11 won't compile on my Solaris 8 machine. It keeps getting
compile errors in clitar, although I am using exactly the same
configuration options as in Samba 3.0.10.
Here is the basic configuration from config.log
$ ./configure --with-ldap --with-ads --with-acl-support --with-pam
--with-krb5=/usr/local --enable-shared --without-gnu-ld
--with-mysql-prefix=/usr/local/mysql

SMBMount and backup application
I would like some advice. I am considering the best way to restructure my
backup scheme on my NT network. I would like to see if it would be
possible/feasible to use cron, smbmount, some SCSI tape drives, and some type
of archive tool to backup my NT shares to a RedHat box using Samba. What do
all of you do out there? I would envision a situation where each night a
script is run by cron that

NT Crashes when doing large network file Xfers (was Re: NT crashes during smbtar)
Ok.. Just for the record, I STAND CORRECTED! The problem does
appear to be NT.. The thing that irritated me was that nobody was
interested in giving any backup data! Everyone just wanted to blindly
admit that it must be NT. Ok.. Enuf bitching.. On to the better stuff...
Anyway, David Mansfield and I are trying to narrow down the machine
configurations where this happens.. Currently, we've

Backup from Linux onto Win2K-share
Hi.
I'm running Kernel 2.4.19 and Samba 2.2.5.
I'm in need to do a backup out of big SAPDB database (60 GB)
onto a share on a Win2K-box (all my databases have to backup
onto this w2K-box where they get saved on tape).
This works fine as long as it comes to 2 GB. Than it stops with
the message "file size exceeded". Obviously there is a file size limit
somewhere in Samba.
How

NT crashes during smbtar
I have been regularly crashing my NT boxen trying to back them up via an
smbtar (smbclient). The crash is not complete - the network layer on NT
goes away. You can still operate the console, but no net traffic. This
is NT workstation and server 4.0 with sp3. The UNIX samba server is
Solaris 2.5 with the latest samba version (1.9.18p8?) also with other
samba versions.
I tried updating the NT

newbie problem: can't mount win xp disk into linux (regkey is set)
Got two machines connected via a 10MBit Hub:
One Slackware Linux 8.1 with eth0 = Realtek8139 (working fine),
one WindowsXP Pro, same NIC, registry key for proper auth is set.
The Windows machine is called xerxes on which the C dir is shared, and there
is /mnt/xerxes/ on the Linux box.
The command:
# mount -t smbfs -o username=(username on win machine),password=(passwd on win
# machine)

smbtar
To all,
Can SambaTar backup multiple "pc's" at once ?
I have 5 Win95 machines with 9 different drive partitions. What would be
the proper syntax ( if any) to specify multiple pc and multiple share names
? I would like to do one complete backup on a single 4mm DAT tape.
Is there a better way to do this using Samba ?
I am using Samba version 1.9.17p4 running on Sun Solaris 2.5.1

Updated from 2.2.8a to 3.0b3 gives smbtar newer failure
Hi all,
Situation:
We use smbtar for backups, incrementals done using -N <last date file>,
and this has worked well with samba 2.2.x
After upgrading to 3.0b3, using the -N (newer) option to smbtar causes a
bad interaction with smbclient.
Eg,:
# smbtar -s PC -x Share -u User -p Pwd -d / -t - -N last-backup -v
gives (if you print out the eval at the end of smbtar script):
eval

smbtar help needed
I am attempting to pipe the output of smbtar into gzip in a script. The
problem that I have is that smbtar echo's out "Params count: 11" before
sending the information out to gzip. This causes the tar file to have a
"tar: directory checksum error" error. Is there any way I can get smbtar
not to report the Params count? The following is the command I am using.

smbtar problem
I was using smbtar to test backing up an NT server, everything works fine
except that for quite a lot of the files it has an error downloading
them(probably 2/3 of them actually). All it says is :
Error reading file \dir\dir\file. Got 0 bytes
Didn't get entire file. size=533, nread=0
I could see this happening if the file were opened exclusively such as the
paging file, but to my knowledge
