To all, Can SambaTar backup multiple "pc's" at once ? I have 5 Win95 machines with 9 different drive partitions. What would be the proper syntax ( if any) to specify multiple pc and multiple share names ? I would like to do one complete backup on a single 4mm DAT tape. Is there a better way to do this using Samba ? I am using Samba version 1.9.17p4 running on Sun Solaris 2.5.1 Thanks in advance, David Fish ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ David Fish Dynamic Digital Design 129 Sheldon Drive, Unit A Cambridge, Ontario Canada N1R 6T7 (519) 740-3377 voice (519) 740-2535 fax dfish@dynamic-digital.com ++++++++++++++ VISIT US +++++++++++++++++++ Web Site: WWW.DYNAMIC-DIGITAL.COM ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hi, We've got several new machines (all exactly identical) and for the installations I was hoping to use smbtar (samba 205a) to back up one and restore to the others. The backup has gone fine and the restore is currently running on the second machine. I have 2 questions basically. 1- is win95 going to screw up and refuse restores of files such as the registry ? 2- the backup of about 2Gb took less than an hour but the restore has taken all night and is still going (I figure it's now at about 90% after 15 hours, any ideas on this?

There are several ways to get around the space and other character problems in windows file names. For example: Problem name can be writen as: Problem\ name or "Problem name" Joel On Tue, Dec 24, 2002 at 09:44:58PM +1100, Colin Jenkins wrote:> Hi all, > > using smbtar to back-up users directories on a winnt server and use -X > to exclude files/directories. > How do I specify windows directories with spaces i.e. Application Data >
dear smb's experts, I have a trouble with smbtar. I'll try to explain it simply. (I read SAMBA docs and looked for informations on the web, but i didn't found the answer...) I have a IBM X220 + RedHat 7.2. One of the activity assigned to this server is to backup users' directory with smbtar. The problem I have is with PC that run WIN2000 (NTFS). When i run smbtar on PC with WIN2000-NTFS, if users have directory or files with special characters, like caff? , colibr? etc., I see the following error (data are not saved): smbtar -s pc-stefano -x procaffe -u user -p password -t /home/profiles/m.levis/prova.tar -v server is pc-stefano share is procaffe\\ tar args is tape is /home/profiles/m.levis/prova.tar blocksize is added interface ip=192.168.1.135 bcast=192.168.1.255 nmask=255.255.255.0 tarmode is now full, system, hidden, noreset, verbose Got a positive name query response from 192.168.1.123 ( 192.168.1.123 ) Domain=[EDP] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] 51200 ( 684.9 kb/s) \attivita_edp.doc ERRDOS - ERRbadfile (File not found.) opening remote file \Conti ricav?.doc (\) tar: dumped 1 files and directories Total bytes written: 51712 with other clients using WIN95/98 I have no problems. Thanks for your help Stefano
