Can't see all of the directories in a share with 2.2.7a-1 & RH8...but older version/kernel can
Hi all,
Hoping someone might be able to steer me in the right direction and/or
help me solve my problem.
We have a number of Linux servers (RH6.2 -> RH8) which connect to the
same share on a Win2000 Server. We've been working kinda hard to get
everything upgraded to either RH7.3 or RH8.0 since we rarely get the
opportunity. 2 similar servers (one dev, one prod) access this same

net view work alike
Hi all,
Is there a command that emulates net view? I want to dump a list of all NetBIOS hosts actively on the LAN.
Thanks,

libpopt.so.0 Issue
Evening;
Just installed Samba on my solaris 9 server at home and am having
difficulties.
When I try to check out the option file using testparm, it always brings
back the message :
ld.so.1: ./testparm: fatal: libpopt.so.0: open failed:
I can't find the library libpopt.so.0 anywhere on the system.
Apparently , I forgot to load something.
Can anyone help me in finding where I can

moving from RH8 to CentOS5.1
Hi all,
Is there a way to 'automatically' recreate users/permissions when moving
from RH8 (yes, I know...way old) to CentOS5.1 or is it just simpler to
recreate the users manually?
Total users on this system is < 20.
Thanks in advance,

RH8 guest: bad fs?
I recently reinstalled RH8 as a VMware guest on a WinXP box.
I used a previously proven script at level 3, containing, in
one line with no inappropriate spaces:
mount -t smbfs -o user,noauto,dmask=777,fmask=777,username=xx,
password=yy //DELLBOX/linuxShare /mnt/linuxShare
I get a failure that reports numerous possibilities including
bad fs, and other other things. I suspect I omitted a

About Shorewall 1.3.14
It is my plan that the upcoming release of Shorewall (1.3.14) will
definitely be the last of the 1.3.x releases and will very probably be the
last release of Shorewall 1.x.x.
I will continue to support Shorewall 1.3 but will be making no more
enhancements to it. I will be devoting my time to Shorewall 2.
If anyone is interested in taking over the development of Shorewall 1,
please let me

Samba 3.0 + AD + OpenLDAP
Hi everyone!
I've already deployed samba-2.2.7a-2 and enabled openLDAP support. I
now have a machine configured as a domain controller authenticating all
windows users via openLDAP. openLDAP is also authenticating all of our
linux users.
I would like to install Exchange2000 on a windows2000 machine so our
windows users can do calendaring (sendmail already handles all of our
email needs).

Mapping samba shares to a second linux box
Hi,
I have a very frustrating problem and I can't seem to find a solution. I am
running redhat 8.0GPL and samba 2.2.8 on two linux boxes. The first linux
box is my storage (used by multiple pc's). The second is my web-server
running apache and php. The web-server recieves files which are meant to be
stored to the first linux box and processed by other computers on the
network.

Problem of access samba from rh8
Hello,
I already setup a samba server as PDC for windows client to logon and
working fine now with the following config:
- redhat 7.3
- samba 2.2.7a
Then I try to access the samba share from Redhat 8, I can use smbclient to
access the share without problem but I can't access the share with "KDE's
Konqueror" (smb://NetbiosName/), it can show all shares, when I double one

RH8 Packages
The samba 3.0.1 RPM for RH 8.0 seems to require two different openssl
packages. It requires libssl.so.4 and libcrypto.so.2. The first is in
openssl 0.9.7 and the second in openssl 0.9.6. Am I missing something?
Which versions of those shared libs are actually required?

Thanks for help with hosts file
All (Tom especially),
Thanks for correcting my hosts file faux pas. I think I now (kinda) know how this file is used. Can I use this to control what subnets can get NAT''ed out and back through the net zone? For instance, with nothing in it every network inside can get out without a problem. If I do specify networks in it, is it true that only those specified can get out and back?

RE: [Private] RH8 and Samba 3
Gordon,
I did as you suggested, and that seems to have fixed it. Thanks for the
suggestion However, this is contrary to the given docs on how to use CUPS
with Samba, is it not?

Please forgive and redirect me if this is the wrong forum for this very
minor posting.
I suspect most people know the answer to this question from some other
experience, but for those of us who don''t it would be helpful to give a
hint on which Windows gem package to install.

Special config needed to add other internal private class C nets?
Hi everyone,
I have shorewall up and running fine, and have for well over a year now. Internally, we have a LAB and they need multiple separate private class C networks to do testing, etc. I built a router, so all of the private LANs can communicate - This seems to work fine. I''m confused about what do I need to modify on my FW to get everyone to communicate out, masq''ed to the

Can't reach Samba shares from Win XP Pro
This seems to be common enough problem. I've used a variety of methods
(command line as well as utilities like LinNeighborhood) to mount XP
shares on my RedHat 8.0 running Samba 2.2.7. I get consistent problems
the other way around. Despite a couple of shares on my Linux partition,
I am just unable to do get to it. Network Neighborhood shows my
Linux/Samba server but no shares, nor can I

Windows XP
Good evening all,
I'm running samba 2.2.2a on RedHat 7.2 as a PDC and until today all was well. One of my users upgraded their workstation to Windows Xp pro and although they received a message "Welcome to the domain" when they try to log on they receive the message that the domain comptroller cannot be located to validate their account.
The workstation show up in the browse list.

Disabling symlink following client side?
Is there any way to specify in smb.conf that you don't want to follow
symbolic links, or to somehow disable this in smbclient? I have an smb
file indexer, and whenever it hits a linux box with a symlink pointing
to the current directory, it creates thousands of extra entries. I'd
like to be able to simply not follow symbolic links, as I have no way of
disabling the "follow
