Accents in filenames on vfat filesystem
Hello.
I am trying to create a text file that contains an accent like '?' in it's
filename on a vfat filesystem. This generates an error like the following:
"test?.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing
I have made a 'modprobe nls_cp850' and 'modprobe nls_iso8859-1' to load
those needed modules.
Then I mounted my FAT32 partition like this:
mount -t

some upper case letters with accent don't appear in file names
I have a backup server (Linux Debian 3.1) that connects to several Windows
2000 and 2003 servers shares with smbmount 3.0.14a. This is how I mount the
shares:
smbmount "\\\\win2000\\inetpubd" /mnt/win2000/ -o
username=backups,password=mypwd
If I list items with accents, this is a sample of how they appear on the
mounted share:

substitute accents
I have an openoffice spreadsheet with a column of
character strings.
Some of them contain accents.
I want to read it in R so I have saved it as a csv
file using Western Europe (ISO-8859-1) character set
(the default, I've tried other sets but it doesn't
help).
R reads it fine with
CharMatrix<-read.csv("test.csv",header=F,sep=",",as.is=TRUE);

Unable to open files that have an accent character
I am using samba-2.0.10-2 on RH 7.1
Issue: when users create files and name them using characters that
contain accents they are not able to open them after saving them
on a
samba share. For a workaround I have to rename the file and remove
the
accents from the file name. Does anyone know of an accent patch
that will work
for our version of Samba?

auto_link fails to handle tilda''s (~) and markdown fails to handle acute accent (`)
Hi There,
So I was just having some trouble with auto_link and markdown.
Specfically auto_link was failing to handle urls with tildas in them (~)
e.g.
http://www.hawaii.edu/~name/index.html
and markdown couldn''t handle an acute accent (`) e.g.
Hawai`i
It seems that acute accents (or backticks) in Markdown signify code
segments, and it seems there''s an open ticket for this:

reading a character translation table into R
I have a txt file (attached) that defines equivalents among characters
in latin1 (or iso-8859-1), numeric &#xxx; codes, HTML entities
and latex equivalents. A portion of the file is shown inline below, but
may not be rendered well in this email.
I'd like to read this into R to use as a character translation table,
but am stuck on two things:
