Samba And Macintosh(netatalk)
Hello,
Anyone out there running a production network supporting PC and Macintosh
clients using samba and netatalk. we are currently using NT 4.0 with
AppleTalk-IP software. Sharing the same files with the Macs and the pc is
a must.
I read someplace that samba 2.2.2 supports Appletalk. Is this true?
Thanks,
Joe

mboot.c32, weird e820 map on HP blade machine, possible memory corruption
I'm seeing this on a HP Blade and i'm not sure why this is happning since
the nature of the issue is so wierd.
I compiled mboot.c with a DEBUG defined in the mboot.c file. In the funciton
init_mmap(), it prints the e820 map and on the HP blade this map values come
out to be totally random. Some weird numbers which dont make any sense at
all.
However, if i add a while(1); or a exit(1); at

periodic/security/550.ipfwlimit
550.ipfwlimit check in /etc/periodic/security takes into account only
global/default verbosity limit and does not account for a specific
logging limit set for a particular rule e.g.:

$ sysctl -n net.inet.ip.fw.verbose_limit

Weird behaviour with multiple accounts pointing to same maildir
I'm finding this a little strange.
I'm putting together a mail server that will (someday, hopefully) serve
a lot of email addresses for a lot of domains.
To make life easy, each account name is the full mail name ... i.e
"joe at domain.com" instead of just "joe" Mail is stored in Maildirs,
and the user account information is all in MySQL. Delivery is
handled by

Is Dovecot able to use PostgreSQL to store mailboxes?
Subject says it all.
(I'm almost positive this is a FAQ, or that the information is online
_somewhere_, but I just spent 20 minutes without finding it ... sorry if I
didn't search hard enough)

need technique for speeding up R dataframe individual element insertion (no deletion though)
Hi fellas,
I am working on a dataframe cam and it involves comparison within the
2 columns - t1 and t2 on about 20K rows and 14 columns.
###
cap = cam; # this doesn't take long. ~1 secs.
for( i in 1:length(cam$end_date))
{
x1=strptime(cam$end_date[i], "%d/%m/%Y");
x2=strptime(cam$end_date[i+1], "%d/%m/%Y");
t1= cam$vol[i];
t2= cam$vol[i+1];

Windows hangs on logout
Moin,
i have installed samba 2.2.3a with FreeBSD. I connect some windows
98 and Windows ME boxes to the server and it works. But if I try to
logout the windows clients hang. If I disconnect the samba shares I
can shutdown the client so it looks like an samba configuration
problem?
What maybe the problem?
Many thanks

Samba Migration
Well, I have successfully migrated about 75 Windows 95/98 machines over to
using Samba as a PDC, it works better than I expected. Much faster than NT
or OS2. However I have a few questions? There are a couple of machines
that will not use the Samba box to authenticate. I know that the network
config on these machines is correct as they were working before, and the net
properties have been set

Winbind on Samba 3.5.5 (centos5)
Folks,
Having some fun with winbind on Samba 3.5.5 on RHEL5 and/or Centos5.
I?ve got it working so ssh logins work correctly and file permissions
are seemingly correct with created files etc. Backend authentication
is from a Win2K3R2 box running RFC2372 extensions (ie not SFU) and all
UIDs etc are assigned for the users who need them.
However, wbinfo returns some interesting things. We?re in a

How to create but not delete file/dir?
Hi,
I want to setup rights so that users can create files/dirs but once they close them they have read-only right for them. I'm using Samba 2.2.2 on XFS but AFAIK XFSs ACL won't help me. One friend told me that he saw once some "well hidden" parameter for Samba which allows this :-)
BTW: NT and Novell allows to do this thing ;-) (also is said Solaris)
Thanks,

win2k/samba problem
I am unable to see my samba server from my Win2k Pro machine.
Can someone please help me out? I had a problem with Samba early on. The
problem was resoved by removing TCP/IP from my Win2k machine and then
reinstalling TCP/IP. Now I've stumbled into this problem.
The following error is repeated over and over in my event viewer:

Samba & VPN
Hi,
I have a linux box running samba 2.2.3a on a network. All machines on the
network can see each other and browsing works fine.
When I use an external machine, connect it to the network via a VPN to the
linux box all existing machines continue to work fine. Existing machines
can see and browse the machine through the VPN. However, the machine
connected via the VPN (win2k) can not see or

Please help, updated to 4.8 serious issues
Greetings,
After I updated my FreeBSD box from 4.7 to 4.8 I "lost" my users, but
heck with users, what I mean by lost is that I can't login, when I try
to login as the root or a regular user it says:
pam_authanticate: permission denied
so, I went ahead and re-updated my box from the very beginning,
including unnecessary at this point cvsup. I used this command: make

NAT proxy concepts
Hi Guys
I have been taking a close look at some networking
opportunities which are being frustrated by the limits which
are imposed by NAT. In particular the constraints impose by
the embargo on double NATing have an impact for a project I
am working on. Has anyone ever seen anything which I would
conceptually describe as a reverse NAT proxy?
What I want to be able to do is to be able to create
