nmbd won't start on HP-UX 10.20 & strangeness
Hi folks,
We're seeing an odd thing happening on about 8 out of 100 UNIX machines
running Samba 1.9.18p7. Mostly on HU-UX 10.20 systems, but at least once
on an IRIX 6.4 system.
The scenario:
- SAMBA up and running in this environment for about 2 years sharing UNIX
home directories with NT boxes.
- SAMBA set up to start via inetd.
- Had a plant shutdown over a weekend a month ago, all

error message in smbd.log file: bind failed on port 139 socket_addr = 0.0.0.0.
I can run nmbd successfully, but smbd dies almost immediately when I run
it, the smbd.log file has the message "bind failed on port 139
socket_addr = 0.0.0.0.". When I do a netstat -an | grep 139, it shows
that tcp is listening on port 139. How do I resolve this conflict
between tcp and smbd?

HP-UX 11.00 samba 2.2.* smbd SIGSYS in pread
configure determines that my HP-UX 11.00 box has pread (and pwrite) because the linker resolves them to symbols in my libc.
however, i don't believe that this system call is implemented in my version of the kernel because smbd dies with a SIGSYS (bad arg
to sys call) in libc:pread.
my workaround was to override what configure automatically determines

smbd using alot of cpu on HP-UX 11.11
Hello Danny Travis,
I am assuming you are using generic Samba 2.2.3a version. We came across the
problem and you can fix it by setting the cache variable on the devnm()
system cal to 1.
Just set the last parameter to the devnm() call in smbd/quotas.c to 1.

smbd service won't start
I have been looking at samba for about 3 days and on Unix to provide shares
for our NT system.
My problem is that I can't seem to start the smbd process. There are some
started but by the guest user and I'm sure I need one started by the root
user.
If I simply type the command it returns no errors to the screen, but there
are errors in the log.smb file. The error is: -

smbd won't start!! Please help!!
Hi.
We have had SAMBA running successfully at work here for a while, it's on a
Sun Sparc Solaris 2.6. The version of samba is 2.0.0.
Unfortunately our sysadmin has left the company, and I have to try and fix a
problem with Samba. When I try and start samba, "nmbd" starts ok, but "smbd"
doesn't start.
When I check the log files, I get these errors:

smbd fails to start but did log a pid in smbd.pid. The process is not in the process table.
I ran smbd -i to display the messages:

I hjave a problem with SaMBa 2.2.1a with HP/UX 11.00. It seems to work fine,
but after a couple hours users received a message in Windows (all 95) like
that ...
"There were no servers to log you into", or something like that (Win95
Brazilian Portuguese). It seems like it can't find the domain master
server...
Below is my smb.conf... Some help is greatly apreciated...

Smbd won't bind - any clues?
Hi folks,
I'm trying to help a fellow sysadmin configure Samba on his DG/UX
server.
He's installed 2.0.5a, and everything seemed to go well in the configure
and make stages.
However, when he tries to start 'smbd' by hand he gets the errors below.
Our machine is binary compatible with his, and I sent him my copy of
smbd (from version 2.0.3), but it made no difference. I had

cannot start smbd on AIX 5.3
Help please.
I am in the process of configuring Samba 3.0.14a onto 4 AIX 5.3 systems.
It seems to be working OK on 3 of the 4, but on the last one, I cannot
start smbd.
nmbd seems to start fine.
The smb.conf file matches the other servers except that the server name
is changed.
Here's the error showing up on the log.smbd file.

Marcio,
Looking at your passdb { } block, you don't have the "result_sucess =
continue" option.
