File Locking for HP OpenView & SAMBA
The HP OpenView documentation recommends the use of PCNFS for connecting
Windows-based (Management Consoles) to the HP OpenView databases on a
UNIX-based (Management Server) system. However, I thought it would be neat
if I could use SAMBA instead of having to install PCNFS on all of the NT
systems.
Anyway, the SAMBA installation went fine, and I can connect to the UNIX
system using NT

performance question (SMB|PCNFS|NFS)
Hello,
Has anyone done any performance comparisons with other protocols?
SMB <--> PCNFS <--> NFS
I'm interested if SMB (ie: Samba) has any performance issues. Anyone have any statistics or know of how to go about doing such tests?
Would appreciate any input. Thanx.

No subject
This means that when a person logs into the samba server it will execute
this file. You should possibly put this file on your NT server that's
currently the PDC in the netlogon share there though, which would mean that
presuming that samba authenticates ok back to the NT box, your users will
transparently get a whole new bunch of drives, and won't need to worry about
password maintenance

Stopping new directory creation ?
Hi, I've been looking for a way to stop users creating new sub-directories
under a top level (shared) directory - which will need to contain 3
readymade directories and/or to stop users placing files outside the 3
readymade directories.
Is this at all possible ?
Got a really basic system - Slackware 8.0 and Samba 2.2.8a running purely as
a fileserver for Win2k clients.
Thanks

How does one change a passwd with Samba
How does a Window's user change thier password on a Unix based
Samba server. I know they can login to the unix box and use smbpasswd(8).
But these users are MS Windows users and I hate to have to explain what
a command prompt looks like.
Unfortunately I don't know enough Windows. Is there such a client
feature built into the Windows, how do they do it against a PDC?
If no solution is

Bug or undocumented behavior in normalizePath() with file system links on windows
Hello,
I discovered a bug or undocumented behavior in normalizePath
steps to reproduce:
execute normalizePath on a folder link on windows. When you are on a
non-english windows box, you likely have links in place for windows'
default folders, e.g. "C:\Programme" linking to "C:\Program Files" on
german windows boxes.
Thus executing

lme4 question
Hello,
I am trying to run the following model:
domi ~ type*ratio+((1|id)+(0+type|id)+(1|face_id)+(1|car_id))
My question is whether the data coding for "face_id" and "car_id" variables
is correct.
As you see on the following sample data structure, "type" is repeated
measure where 1=car, 0=face. Thus, I coded "face_id" as "0" when the type

Share name must = vaild user?
I have been having a heck of a time trying to setup samba with "security =
share"
I have the following shares and related config files defined yet windows
95/98 clients get password rejected when trying to connect to the shares.
However I have found that if I call the share the same as the user in the
valid user parameter the
can connect fine. I have tried the "username map"

backup
I just installed samba4 on ubuntu 14.04 from de repositories:
# samba --version
Version 4.1.6-Ubuntu
I wanted to make a backup but *samba_backup* was missing, so I download
4.1.7 using Git and configured it.
The problem is it isn't working, tar is stopping because it refuses to
create and empty file. I tracked it to the second *tar* in the script, and
*echoed* it:
# samba_backup

Samba performance and sizeing
We are moving from a PCNFS client to SMB client environment and hence moving
from NFS for our Sun fileservers to Samba. I have seen figures indicating
Samba is as good NT for SMB service. However what we are concerned with is:
a) relative performance of Samba vs Sun's NFS
b) loading on servers with lots of active connections (and hence lots of
smbds). Do you need more memory than with

I have set up my samba server to act as the domain controller of my

When I change encrypt password option to NO option, the message "Account

Implementing SAMBA w/ Automounter
I checked the archives and automounter is only mentioned for home dirs.
Our organization would like to implement SAMBA but we have over 150
mount points. Is there a way we can use automounter maps with
SAMBA?
Having to edit smb.conf each time we add/remove a mount point would be quite
annoying and time consuming.
Cheers,

Automounter problem in C5.5?
Last night I was having some bizarre problems with my USB ports. I
couldn't access one of my scanners, and when I started moving plugs
around, it seemed as though I lost more peripherals. For some reason,
I did NOT lose the laser printer, but my one scanner and my
scan/fax/printer disappeared and wouldn't come back.
I figured it might be the automounter, so I tried plugging in a USB

Samba 4 LDAP + Automounter Maps
Hello,
I just started evaluating Samba 4 AD DC for a Mixed Environment of
Linux and Windows client machines.
What I have so far is 3 Machines in a virtual environment:
A Windows 7 client machine
A Debian GNU/Linux (7.0) client machine
A Debian GNU/Linux (7.0) server running Samba4 AD DC
Yet missing from the setup is a fileserver providing Samba Shares for
Windows and NFS4 for Linux.
