SUMMARY: Amanda 2.3.0.5-Samba 1.9.16p11 PC backups...
My whole problem as far as samba was concerned was not compiling with DES support *and* that I did compile with FAST_SHARE_MODES. One clue was this in the samba.log. file. I then did a dejanews search for smb_shm_open and came up with that portion of the solution. ERROR smb_shm_open : mmap failed with code 11 The DES portion came from just reading the WinNT.txt file that came with Samba. I

Amanda 2.3.0.5-Samba 1.9.16p11 PC backups...
At the bottom is what I got returned from AMANDA 2.3.0.5 after patching Samba 1.9.16p11 to give estimates. Any idea what I might not have done yet? My disklist reads: shokk \\thor\depot nocomp-user-gnutar To connect successfully to that server with smbclient, I have to do this, giving the same password that I now have in /etc/amandapass: smbclient \\\\THOR\\DEPOT -U BACKUP Also, the

We have been using samba since 1995 and have found it superb, Thanks to all. Recently I built Samba1.19.17alpha4 on a DECstation 5000 running Ultrix 4.4 and included -DFAST_SHARE_MODES This results in UIST>smbclient -L UIST Session request failed (0,0) with myname=UIST destname=UIST Unspecified error 0x0 Your server software is being unfriendly and ERROR

That would be a *really* bad idea. See the l0phtcrack source for details :-). Seriously, though. The password hashes used on NT are very poor. They don't use salt and people are now

Yes!!!! You just solved a problem I've been having since 1.9.17p1!!!! I didn't realize that CIFS was limited to passthrough authentication for only its domain, so that listing multiple password servers from different domains would not work...the following did. Yeeeehhaaa! Hurm...excuse me. I added to the following in my config to make this work: netbios aliases = unix1 unix2 (not

ERROR: Failed to initialize share modes!
I've been getting this error when clients attempt to connect. testparm passes OK, and smbd and nmbd launch OK, but when a client attempts to connect I get the following error messages (in the log): locking/shmem.c:smb_shm_open(930) ERROR smb_shm_open : mmap failed with code Invalid argument locking/locking.c:locking_init(169) ERROR: Failed to initialize share modes! I'm a new linux user trying to run samba on Linuxppc R5 but smbd doesn't appear to be responding properly. Both nmbd and smbd are configured as daemons and netstat lists netbios-ssn as listening. I can't find anything else that would conflict starting from inetd. Nmbd appears to work as I can list the available servers and the server is seen by the clients but I don't need

newbie needs help
Hi everyone, let me start with an apology for what may turn out to be my own ignorance. I'm new to samba, and relatively new to linux, so please be gentle. :) I am currently having a problem seeing the shares on my samba server. i am running 2.0.3 on linuxppc 1999 on a Macintosh G3 266. My Win95 OSR-2 486 can see the server, but cannot access the shares. when i attempt to connect with

NT Crashes when doing large network file Xfers (was Re: NT crashes during smbtar)
Ernie, Thanks for the great info.. Based on what you were seeing, would you suspect that part of the problem is with the combination of NT and the 3com card (3c595)? Currently, we are ONLY seeing this under NT Workstation (not server) and almost all of our machines have this same 3com 3c595 card (only if using 100BaseT).. -- Rick -----Original Message----- From: Ernie Oporto

Diagnosis Test Pass, But...
Here's my setup: Caldera Open Linux Lite (kernel 2.0.29) Samba 2.0.4a Windows Domain (Two Windows NT 4.0 Servers -- one PDC, one BDC -- and numerous Windows NT 4.0 Workstations) I can see my Linux box in Network Neighborhood on my Windows NT boxes. I can open the Linux box and see the top level shares available. When I try to open a share I see one or two anonymous folders. Anyone

Netlogon share and locking
Rob, I hope you have referred to the example smb.conf file. We really cut our teeth on some of the example config settings. It is IMPERATIVE that nothing in the NETLOGON share should become locked - this breaks the logon process very badly! Some Win95 clients will always hang on logon if any files end up being locked in the netlogon share. For the record, here is an extract from

Solaris Shared Memory and Samba 18p3-4
People, Please could someone in the know help me out with the shared memory configuration (/etc/system?) required on Solaris 2.5 and above to support samba with about 1000 open files per process. Since 1.9.18p3 I have been getting errors like: Apr 2 12:15:39 skyhawk smbd[27493]: Can't create or use IPC area And now with 1.9.18p4 I get the same, plus: Apr 2 12:15:39 skyhawk smbd[27493]:

Recursive dir error...
One thing that needs to be mentioned is that for PC backups, the amanda patch that has to be applied to samba requires that you use level 3 logging to see the "Total" line. Also, does anyone know what this error means? smb: \> recurse directory recursion is now on smb: \> dir received 5 entries (eos=1 resume=0) . D 0 Thu Jun 5

I hate to suggest this, but we need to do what has been done on a few other lists that I'm on. We need to close the list off to only people that are members. It's a shame to see so much spam here after seeing it in my personal mailbox all day long.
