Mac OS X HFS+ metadata patch, take 2
Hi. Several months ago, I posted my first pass at a patch to transfer Mac OS X HFS+ metadata (resource forks and Finder metadata) to non-HFS+ filesystems (Linux, Solaris, etc). I finally got a chance to update the patch to reflect suggestions offered on the list. Thanks for the ideas, this version should be a big improvement. The diff and a binary (and a fuller explanation) can be found at:

HFS+ resource forks: WIP patch included
As you all know, rsync doesn't have any special handling for Mac OS X HFS+ resource forks. Kevin Boyd made RsyncX and rsync_hfs, to address this gap, but they only work when the destination filesystem is also HFS+. I haven't been able to find any references to an rsync that is capable of syncing from HFS+ to UFS (etc). The only solutions I've seen involve lots of preprocessing

rsync HFS+ -> UFS2
Hi, This is my first post to this list. I have been backing up some files with rsync from My Mac OS X 10.4.7 machine, which uses HFS+ filesystem to a FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE machine, which uses UFS2 filesystem. They go across a 100-base-T lan, which has little or no traffic on it. On my Mac, I mount the nfs exported volume on the FreeBSD machine with: $ mount -t nfs moe:/backup

Aw: Re: Re: rsync not copy all information for font file
what is the source and destination filesystem? here is some report that rsync has some problem with HFS+ filesystems and "ressource forks": http://quesera.com/reynhout/misc/rsync+hfsmode/ but as you are using ubuntu and not osx i`m curious what`s the problem, so i think we need more information here. regards roland > Gesendet: Freitag, 12. rsync-ing on MacOS X.
Hi all, I'm setting up a backup script for my Mac, and I'm wondering about the rsync ability of dealing with HFS+ filesystem (resource-fork and such...). I've searched the mailing list archive for this topic and I've found some thread regarding it, but it's not clear to me what is the actual situation. Is the HFS+ officially supported? Will it be in the near future?

Mini-HOWTO: Fixing rsync on Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.x)
[Now the horse has left the barn, I decided to finally implement that backup system I'd been thinking about for ages. Disk crashes can be great motivators] [Web-location for the living version of this document: http://www.lartmaker.nl/rsync/] Goal: Producing a working network backup / cloning system for Mac OS X systems. The system can be used for local backups as well, for example to

rsync backups on Mac OS X - mknod errors + icon disappears...
Hi I am a rsync (on Mac OS X, RsyncX version with extended HFS+/-eahfs forks) beginner (I merely use it for backing up my desktop machine to a bootable external firewire volume, so that I can resume work in case of a harddrive disaster) and I got these messages: mknod "/Volumes/backup/Applications/Plone2/Sites/Default/var/zopectlsock" failed: Invalid argument mknod

Feature request: Sync Mac OS resource forks and metadata on Mac OS X
I have a feature request for rsync. I tried posting it to the FAQ-o-matic, but that system didn't seem to be accepting new questions. I hope this is an okay list for the request--apologies if it's misdirected. Mac OS X provides support for the Mac file system resource forks and mac specific metadata (e.g., creator and file type). Most Unix applications ignore this information, but it

rsyncX hangs on Mac OS X
I am attempting to backup the Users directory on my desktop running OS X 10.3.6. I am backing up to Jaguar Server 10.2.8. I am using RsyncX version 2.1 on both systems. RsyncX Server is set up to run on both systems however in this instance the Rsync client is my desktop and server is Panther Server. When I kick off an RsyncX session, RsyncX will run for a while, then stop part of the way

Fwd: rsync on OSX for transferring files using FAT32
Hi, Which version of Mac OS X are you running? If you are on Mac OS 10.5.x then I can only suggest that you try either formating the drive to HFS + or creating a disk image with an HFS+ file system. If you are running Mac OS 10.4.x then ensure that that ACL support is enabled on the drive. The following URL contains information on how to check and enable ACL support :

Rsyncing Linux to OS X
I'm trying to use rsync to backup some database files on a Linux box to an OS X machine, so I can write them to a tape drive connected to the OS X machine. I'm aware that there are some "issues" about rsync and certain file forks found on HFS+ filesystems, but I'm not sure that should be stopping me from accomplishing what I want to do. I'm using rsync 2.5.5 on both

rsync not copy all information for font file
Hi Ram, In OS X, some font types (not all) put the font payload in the resource fork. Netatalk provides AFP filesharing, imitating the resource forks by creating secondary files in ?.Appledouble? folders within each folder. Netatalk tracks the resource forks, and other metadata, by keeping a ?Desktop database? at the root of the shared volume ? look for .AppleDesktop, and .AppleDB. You can

RSYNC/FreeBSD/Macintosh files...
I am wanting to rsync over mac files to a freebsd 4.5 box, but have recently found out that rsync does not preserve resource forks, or creator types and maybe some other things. But, has anybody had any experience like this, would tar'ing the files and then rsync'ing that seem a worthwhile solution. There's a lot, so testing is going slowly. Thanks!
