Take down and restart.
What is the best way to bring down and restart ices with a new playlist, or do I need to stop ices at all? .ssh files
I burned an .iso cd of the home dir of a server, my .ssh files are there, but if I restore from the cd using rsync -azurvp /mnt/cdrom/.ssh/* ~/.ssh the permissions seem screwy. I'm trying to use my id_dsa ssh key to login to other servers, but they don't acknowledge the key because the "permission are incorrect". Any Suggestions? Did i screwup, by using mkisofs &

Live DB backups with rsync?
Is it possible to do live backups of a running DB with rsync??? I was just talking to livevault.com & they (only on win boxes) say they can grab changes from a client's live DB & sync them remotely. It sounded like BS to me, but I'm neither a DB guy or sync'ing expert. Steve Mallett

BackupExec Agent on Samba
Is there an improved BackupExec Unix agent available that works with Samba? If not, can someone tell me how to work around the lack of the archive bit that Linux has? In particular, RedHat Linux 7.2 is the system I'm looking for help on. I found the following hints in an older version of this newsletter, Samba Digest, Vol. 3, Issue 34, sent March 21, 2003, that had this in it: Yes, we have

BackupExec 8.5/NT + Samba 2.2
Hi, Does anyone have experience with BackupExec and Samba? BackupExec refuse to access Samba shares. Windows shares are OK, but all my Samba shares are not. I have Samba on at least 2 Linux 2.4 machines + 1 on Solaris. Neither ones work with BExec. Any idea? Other have experience with BExec and Samba? Samba and BackupExec
Hi, I've got Samba 2.0.2 and a server NT4 SP3 with Seagate BackupExec 7.0. When I want to backup Samba with Seagate BackupExec, I get a message saying "Unable to connect to server, <F5> to retry", and then another one saying "A device specific error occured". I've read all the Samba archive about that subject, but I do not find any solution. I don't

Rsync service on Win2k?
Hi all, I'm trying to get rsync running on a Windows 2k box (my tape backup server) to remotely back up stuff from a few unix boxes. Not my favored constellation, but there's not much I can do about that. I'm hoping someone could give me a quick tip or two on getting rsync working as a Win2k service. I'm not real proficient with Win2k, so be gentle. The posts I could find

Subject: Samba and Seagate BackupExec
Hi Franck, to my knowledge, the Backup Exec service "runs" under a certain user. In most cases it is the user who installed it, so very often "Administrator". Now if you try to backup a Samba share, Backup Exec tries to retrieve the files of this share and has to authenticate to the Samba Server. I suspect it will do this with the "credentials" of the user the Backup

[Slightly OT] server headers
I finally got my blog running on Apache 2.2.2 & Mongrel 0.3.13.3 (clustered). Whew! Two whole flippin'' days trying to get virtual hosts and proxies and permissions (& svn) to work together. Anyway, I''ve got the little server header thingy extension in Firefox. When I browse my blog, it shows the mongrel headers. Is there a quick fix for this? -- Cheers, Kevin

FW: backupexec
If you can see the server, but not shares, you most likely have not published any directories. What version of the BE agent are you using? I've noticed 4.6 works well (the install actually works well and will walk you through the setup to publish the directories to be backed up). It's often easier to just publish root (but exclude /proc /tmp). Also, I've found out that in the hosts

Questions about exclude-file
Is there anyway to keep rsync from reporting an error when attempting to sync pagefile.sys (through a samba share)? It seems like any type of exclusion of the file gets ignored, why is that? Anyway around it? Also, of experimented with the exclude-from syntax quite a bit and haven't figure out how you could just backup all .doc files on a file system and exclude everything else. Thanks - Max

Restoring original file permissions
Hello, I've compiled and configured Samba 1.9.18p8 on a DEC Alpha running DEC Unix 4.0b for the express purpose of enabling a Windows NT 4.0 server running Seagate BackupExec software to be able to see my Unix filesystems as NT shares and back them up (as of this time BackupExec does not support DEC Unix clients). Test backups have worked OK, but I'm having problems restoring the

How to setup Rsync as an NT Service
For a recent project I needed to run Rsync as a service on Windows NT. The following is a link to the instructions I created to recreate my steps. http://members.home.net/cbollerud2/projects/rsync/NTService.html The "no-fork" patch used here is very similar to the "no-detach" option mentioned in many previous posts. I wish I could take credit for it, but I basically put

rsync raising an IO error for an excluded file
Hi, when syncing from windows NT/cygwin to linux usimg rsync 2.5.2 I get the following error: readlink pagefile.sys: Permission denied IO error encountered - skipping file deletion pagefile.sys is however in the exclude-list, so I think rsync shouldn't care that it can't stat the file. The code fragment responsible is if (readlink_stat(fname, &st, linkbuf) != 0) {

SSL and STARTTLS
I wanted to enable SSL on some alternate ports so that a limited number of people could try SSL access. But doing so enabled STARTTLS in IMAP, so that all IMAP users got surprised (at least those whose clients attempted to use it automatically). e.g.: # IP or host address where to listen in for SSL connections. Defaults # to above non-SSL equilevants if not specified. imaps_listen =
