write permissions - chapter 2
hello all,
I have been trying to run MS Windows and Excel under wine. They are
about the only two remaining dependent Windoz apps
The error they produce relates to write permissions. However that does
not seem to be the root issue. Other apps, such as Notepad, seem to be
able to write without issue.
What is currently required in way of wine config to satisfy Word and Excel?

excel.exe is still broken on the latest wine 2.11 with the mscreate.dir
error on excel start up. the system is win98 so dcom98.exe is loaded.
Is there a work around. If so where is it documented? I have tried to
install the dcom95 version but that errors.

how to get wine error trace
The system is FC4 and the wine version is 0.9.5. The condition is wine
produces a rapid string of errors when attempting to open an
application. The original error is lost. I have tried redirecting by
changing the redirecting '>' with both '1>' and '2>'. In any event the
original error is lost out of the buffer and redirection does not work.
How can the full

a tail of 2 users ?
The system is FC5 and wine is the latest .17. There are two users
configured on the system, A and B. They are configured to be as alike as
possible. Diff of set output shows only the expected differences. Wine
is built from CVS.
winecfg is configured to the same profile with only the appropriate user
path names changed.
The problem is wine works well for one of the users and not well at all

Reachout 8.42 with Wine on KDE 2 RH 7
Hi,
I am trying to eliminate all remnants of Windows 98 on my system, but for
my job I need to be able to run Reachout 8.42 Enterprise (from the now
defunct Stac). Has anyone tried to run this from Linux with wine? Or are
there any fake RO clients for Linux? Once I get over this hurdle, I can
free up the space on my Win98 partition finally!
Thanks,
Philip

internet explorer
Hello,
Has anyone succeed to install Internet Explorer with wine-20041019 ? For
what I have seen from winehq it should be possible but I have not
succeeded. Which dlls and which config must I have ? I have tried with
ie5 and ie6. I suspect I must have some native dlls but I do not know
which and which config must I have.

Trying to figure out why my Cruzer Micro 512"MB" won't boot.
Office Depot ran a deal with a Cruzer Micro 512MB (actually, around
488MiB) for about $20 after a rebate I may not see for months. I saw
the ad yesterday and stopped by pretty well first thing this afternoon
to snatch one up while they were still there since I've been having to
make do with two 256MB drives to hold all the data I neded since one
drive couldn't hold enough (though I must

Stupid question: where is the Preferences box?
Good day!
I am GUI-challenged, and proud of it, but I would like a bit of help.
When I start netscape (picked from an Earthlink CD) it raises a message
box that says (this is picked from --debugmsg +text and folded for
mailing convenience):
trace:text:DrawTextExW L"Error: temporary directory E: does not exist.
Please enter a new directory in the preferences box.", 99 ,

Problem Running Samples (Mingw, Ruby 1.8.0)
I believe I have followed Gour''s instructions to the letter for
compiling wxwindows, ruby and wxruby.
Indeed all of the compilation stages have worked flawlessly, however
when I try to ruby any of the samples I get an error dialog
"This application has failed to start because wxmsw241d.dll was not

There are a lot of apps without maintainers, and there might be users of those apps who would be willing take a few minutes to post bits of useful information in a wiki, but don't want the responsibility of being a maintainer. Sure, they could just post info in a comment, but user comments are

Wine runs your malware!
http://www.trustedsource.org/blog/186/Running-Windows-Malware-in-Linux
So: avoid running toxic waste, and use a fresh .wine and run ClamAV
over it regularly if you're fond of trying random binaries found on
the Net a lot ;-)

unable to run excel 2000 under wine
All,
Excel 2000 does not run under wine. The error has been consistent for 10
wine releases or more. The system is FC7 with all the upgrades
installed. The error is consistent with both locally built wine and with
package rpm versions. The other parts of office, word, etc run
successfully. This is a fresh install of excel.

MS Office problems
Hi all,
I want to use MS Office apps under Linux (RH 7.0) without always
rebooting my system to Windows so I just installed Wine.
Installation gave no troubles.
MS Word, Excel, Ppt all start but after a few seconds, they hang.
Ie. MS Word starts, the cursor blinks three times in a new document and
then nothing.
The Office programs are installed on the Win98 partition.
Anyone knows what I might

june 2005 release and 'registry' ?
All,
I am testing with the wine 2005 release. The release notes state config
file control has been moved to the registry and that winecfg is active.
winecfg does not seem to recognize dll overrides. Has anyone else seen
this? If so were you able to work around it?
Thanks,

cannot rsync when source directory lacks write permission
I seem to be running into a problem where I am trying to rsync from a
source directory that lacks write permissions (i.e. r-xr-xr-x).
Presumably this is because rsync creates the directory on the
destination, then sets the permissions to match the source and then
tries to sync the contents of the directory, which it cannot of course
lacking write permission in the directory.
Is there a way to

Slightly OT : write bootable CentOS USB disk under Windows 10 and Mac OS X ?
Hi,
I'm currently writing my fourth book about Linux, for the french editor
Eyrolles. The book will cover Linux server basics for pros, and it will
be based on CentOS 7.
I have a quick question to those of you who use either Windows 10 or Mac
OS X as their everyday desktop system.
How do you write a bootable CentOS USB disk using either Windows 10 or
Mac OS X ?
I've googled this, of

Experiences with Word 2000, SmartSuite 9
Using WINE 20010323 under a stock Mandrake 7.2 system.
Word 2000 seems to work but won't save files. If the file exists,
it just says, ``file exists'' [OK]. If you save anywhere fancy
like ``My Documents'' it says this is not a real filesystem location
[OK]. If you specify a drive and path (h:\filename.doc) it tells you
that this is an invalid filename, please check it [OK].
