Deprecation of scp protocol and improving sftp client
It seems that there are a few camps here:
* The scp power users - this camp believes that scp supporting backtick
notation is fine and that running arbitrary commands is a perfectly fine
thing to do.
* The restricted shell users - this camp believes that scp supporting
backtick may not be the best, and there are various restricted shells which
can prevent this. Power users may belong to this

"Safe" way to automatically install required packages...
R-helpers:
I'm working on an r-package that I want to make as easy-to-use as
possible for a novice R-user, which includes automatically installing
required packages. I, myself, am a novice R-packager, so the solution
I came up with was to embed:
print("Loading required packages...")
if (!require("reshape")) { install.packages("reshape") }

We really need more community involvement with GSoC
I think the idea of dedicated "newbie hour - no question is too basic" drop
in sessions is fantastic. +1 for that.

[LLVMdev] call for suggestions
Hi, Dear LLVMers
I just touch llvm source code for several days, and I didn't know the
interfaces of the analysises and transformations of LLVM. For exampe, how
to backtrace CFG, and whether exits a backtracking interator to do such
work?
For a novice, I also seek for suggestions about how to become familiar with
LLVM interfaces as soon as possible. Now I have a plan to write a pass based

Note : I do not mean to compare or criticize any organization. This is
based on my experience.
Dear Community,
I have subscribed llvm-dev list for last 6 months and I follow most of the
thread when it makes sense to me. I have observed that some times some
mails do not get any kind of response. Mostly novice students and some one
trying to use LLVM in the research have many questions.

We really need more community involvement with GSoC
I would like to insist more to use slack.com due to persistent storage of
message it can be useful to create 'Minutes of Meeting' kind of thing and
later on shared on mailing list so that all community can be aware of that,
when some serious discussion has happened during 'office hours'.

@James
I am not sure in IRC if we can retrieve back the older messages. So
consider Slack as suggestion only.

missing documentation entries ... WARNING
Dear R-devel,
I am a relative novice in R, but I am eager to post a new package my group developed in CRAN, but I am stumped by a set of documentation related warnings created by R CMD check.
So, my current plan is to recreate the documentation by religiously applying and modifying the skeleton codes that can be generated by R. In the meantime, I thought I'd post to the discussion group to

Help for Beginners: A Simple Way of Installing the Latest Version of Rsync?
Hello,
Please bear with me because I'm no command-line guru. Quite the opposite.
I was wondering if there existed a simple, straightforward way for a novice to
install the latest version of rsync (3.0.9) onto Mac OS X. After searching
around the Web, I found that the following site offers such an installer --
http://www.themacplace.co.uk/downloads.html --
but the proposed version of rsync

We really need more community involvement with GSoC
Hi,
Indeed, and I think this suggestion will succeed best if the delta between
what community members do now and what they would need to do is small.
Loitering on one extra IRC room is trivial; loading a whole new system just
at the right time is likely to get fewer members.

ext3 .journal location?
Forgive my novice question, but I am a new student of Linux working on presenting the ext3 journaling filesystem to my class. I seek any advice on how to visibly demonstrate (including a purposeful crash of a Linux box) the benefits of ext3 over ext2. I am not worthy to lick the bootstraps of this group, but I beg for any help! The problem I am having extends to even locating the .journal file

syslinux / antique computers
Hi,
is there an easy way to circumvent the SYSLINUX novice protection thing?
intended users don't know about CTRL key to circumvent it.
I'm trying to make a generic bootdisk for systems of 8086 - Pentium4.
however the bootdisk is slow, so I'd like to use Syslinux + Memdisk to load a diskette image.
then the text displayed to user will be:
