general questions about R on debian/powerpc
Hi,
I am about to but a laptop, and have narrowed the choices down to a
Dell Latitude 600 and an Apple Powerbook G4 Aluminium (Princeton
provides these models at a discount for grad students).
I am biased towards the Powerbook, and would like to run Debian on it.
I have only used debian on i386 platforms so far. I use R quite
frequently, so I would be interested in your experience of running R

[LLVMdev] Compilation error in 64 Bit PowerPC machine with Yellowdog Linux 6.1
Hi,
i am trying to compile llvm in a 64 Bit PowerPC machine with Yellowdog Linux 6.1 operating system. I could compile llvm but when I was trying to compile the llvm-gcc4.2 front end the compilation aborted with following error message:

../../gcc/config/rs6000/rs6000.c:1510: error: ‘MASK_MACHO_DYNAMIC_NO_PIC’ undeclared

[LLVMdev] Problems building llvm-gcc-4.2 on ppc32, OS X 10.4.10
Hi, I'm guessing that no one has tried this exact combination yet.
I'm trying to build the gcc4.2 front end with current LLVM SVN
on a G4 Powerbook running 10.4.10.
I started with this:
../gcc4.2-trunk/configure
--prefix=$HOME/Documents/hpcl/LLVM/llvm-gcc-4-2/install
--enable-llvm=$HOME/Documents/hpcl/LLVM/llvm-svn-obj/
--with-gmp=$HOME/Documents/hpcl/LLVM/llvm-gcc-4-2/libdeps

R-beta: Mac
While it is good to have R on my local Unix box it would be wonderful to
have a recent version to run on my (Mac) Powerbook. I know that the
PowerMac version is on hold so
(1) Any idea when it might appear
(2) Any chance of a bit more functional Mac version

Darwin binary
I am looking for help how to install the Darwin binary under MacOS X
10.2.3 on a G4 or G3 powermac or recent iBook.
Download of the binary yielded a file "tincd-1.0-darwin-powerpc-dynamic"
This file is not recognized by the OS X installer, apparently it is
not a package.
I am well familiar with the Mac (GUI), have some basic knowledge in
Unix and networking, and no experience with

Make task for rake
I have a dual processor machine and got mad that both processors were
not working away at compiling wxRuby. At first I tried using Ruby
threads but they are ''fake'' software threads that run in one process
on one cpu. So until Ruby gets ''real'' threads I added a task to rake
that generates a makfile which is run with the command: ''make -j 2''

Asterisk on iMac G3 Debian5 (powerpc)
I've recently installed the latest Debian Linux for powerpc onto
and old iMac (version A) the original iMac with a 233Mhz G3 processor
and 160MB of sdram.
The debian install went smooth and so the the apt-get install of
Asterisk 1.4.21
It appears to have no functioning zaptel or ztdummy module.
Is because of hardware? or is it because whoever built the package

Power PC with a linux distribution and R
This is an operating system question, but it is with the intent of
using R on that operating system. I have an ibook G4 Power PC that I
am going to install linux on. Is there a better, worse, or perhaps
easier (I am a linux newby migrating from mac) distribution that I
should look at. I appreciate your help. I didn't post this in the
sig-mac because I don't know if it fits there better

R-2.3 macosx segfault
Dear all,
this is my first message to this list. I hope it is not off topic
(and should have been posted to R-help for example).
I have R-2.3.0 installed on a couple of systems, including powermac
G5, iBook G4 (both with MacOSX 10.4.6), windows xp and linux (kubuntu
5.10). When trying to install package aroma from authors web site I
found that R for macosx crashes with segfault. This

[LLVMdev] compilation failure on OS X powerpc
I have an ibook G4 (powerpc) running OS X panther. I am using gcc 4.0.3

G4-400mhz enough for CentOS 4.3?
It's that time again. I'm stuck with a bunch of older Powermac G4's
that I either need to repurpose or give the heave ho. I've not tried
CentOS on Mac hardware before. Would the following config be suitable
for a (somewhat slow) workstation?
PowerMac G4
400mhz
256mb RAM
40gig ATA disk
Some sort of dual-head ATI video setup with 64mb VRAM (I've forgotten

Memory Leak in OS X version of R?
This is the conclusion from a prior thread ([R] " cannot allocate vector of
length 1072693248") which ended with no other answer but that there must be
a problem in the OS X version of R, or in the compile of the source on OS X.
I??ve posted code and data here:
http://www.well-wired.com/reflibrary/uploads/1084503247.zip
If you setwd() into the directory that is made, then ??source()??

Macbook for Rails Development
Hi All,
I''ve finally got fed up of struggling with Windows and am on the verge
of splashing out on a Macbook for Ruby/Rails development. I''ve seen
DHH''s post about it on loudthinking but I wondered if anyone else has
any more wisdom...
Is it worth it over a powerbook? Any tips on good OSX apps for Rails
dev (textmate, i know already)? Anything not working well on

[LLVMdev] compilation failure on OS X powerpc
The reason I didn't use Xcode 2.4 is because I'm running OS X 10.3.9
(Panther). I have not upgraded the OS to 10.4. Xcode 2.4 requires OS X
10.4, according to Apple's website. Do you know otherwise? I think the
highest Xcode I can get is 1.5.
By the way what does FSF mean?
I also tried compiling llvm with the gcc 3.3 that comes with OS X 10.3,
and it gave the exact same error

OT: iBook or MacBook Pro?
Well, the worm has turned and I think I may actually get an Apple ;P.
But I can''t decide which one. Pros and cons:
14" iBook:
+ modem (for when broadband kicks out, or on the road and there''s no
WIFI)
+ screen is probably big enough (though I currently have a 15" Dell)
+ doesn''t get as hot as the MacBook
+ almost half the cost
+ less likely to get stolen
