When .. isnt the same? (not a problem
I don?t understand why ".." isn?t working the same way for "ls" and "cd" when inside
a symbolic link. The reason I ask is that I made a link to a directory with some
scripts that saves output in "../output.txt" and I could not find the output until I
found that ".." isn?t the directory you see when you do a $pwd. I solved the problem
by making a

GUI/X11 login and shells other than bash?
Dear Experts,
After one of updates that was released some time ago (a Month ago or maybe
even earlier) I have noticed the following. On the machines with default
runlevel 5 (sorry about old terminology, the new one is still confusing
for me ;-) GUI/X11 login (display manager) lists only users whose default
shell is bash. Or, at least users whose default shell is tcsh are not
listed at all, and if

Compiling Kernel Modules
Hi,
Here'a a question - is it possible to compile a single module (distributed
in the kernel source tree) for the current CentOS kernel (2.6.9-5.0.5)
without recompiling the entire kernel and all other modules.
I basically need reiserfs3 (nb. why is it disabled? it's a module, you
use it, it doesn't wreck anything...) and I don't really want to change
the rest of the kernel, and

4 important bugs again <;
hello everyone,
thanks to todd 1.2.21 is out :)
every release getting better, i would like to get
consensus on these "important" bugs:
#252078 logtail: should depend on perl >= 5.8
sarge as any other modern linux distro use perl 5.8.x,
it's even inside of its base.
backports are under the peril of its author
if no one voices up, i'll close that bug in the next days.

adduser ?
I installed CentOS 3.3 some time ago and the first thing I did after the install was
to run a little script that adds my user plus a few other things.
The script adds my user like this
USER="ulrik"
PASSWD="<mypasswd>"
/usr/sbin/adduser $USER -p $PASSWD
It seemed to work fine except I couldn't login? I searched Google for reasons why I
could only login via ssh as

Power users on Samba 3.0.1.
Good Afternoon,
How do I set my domain users to became Power Users on the workstations?
Is there a way to map unix group "x" on the domain to became nt group
"Power Users"? I did some research and I found someone mentioning "take
domain users from the users group, and add it to the power user group"
but my w2k does not list "Domain Users" under

why was LILO removed from centOS 4.2?
I can't choose LILO as boot loader anymore in the install process? And what is the
advantages in GRUP vs. LILO that are so great that LILO has been deleted all
together?
One big disadvantages when forced to use GRUB is that it is a hassle to make the
disks in a RAID1 bootable.
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2005-March/msg05935.html
and RAID1 seems pretty useless when it is the

Missing files in directory listings
Hi
A customer of mine has a strange problem with samba 2.2.8a
They have a number of directories with 600 - 800 files in each
directory.
When new files are added to the directories, and they do a directory
listing on their PC's ( Win 2000 pro SP2 and SP3 ), the last 10 files
are not shown. THis happens both when using "explorer" or doing a `dir`
in an command prom window.

[off-topic] Question about csh.
Hi
I received this request from a user and could not find the solution. I
would like to know if someone already solved this:
"At the command prompt I used to be able to type the first letter of a
line command and then by using the up arrow key, scroll through all of
the line commands, that begin with that letter, that I had previously
executed."
It's a machine with CentOS-5.3,

make linux26
I thought I read somewhere that you no longer have to do a special make command for the 2.6 kernel. Is this true, or should I still make linux26? I'm having problems getting anything zaptel to load properly.

Question: vxvm/dmp or zfs/mpxio
Hello experts,
My client is thinking about changing one of their servers running Solaris 8 (NIS Hub to mention something) to a server running Solaris 10.
The question that i have given is to check the differences or if you wish the status/stability of changing VXvm with DMP (Dynamic Multi Pathing) to a system with ZFS and MPXio. I have made my share of RTFM but not come any closer to an answer.

But today the biggest problem is, that a lot!!! of mailboxes are
damaged. within three year no mailbox was damaged using wu imap.
The errormessage is:
imap(cstrang): File isn't in mbox format:
