SELinux threads, cynicism, one-upmanship, etc.
After reading through the various SELinux threads, I really became quite
perturbed. I mean, really quite perturbed.
As an IT Director (and the entire IT department, currently), if I were hiring
a sysadmin I know for a fact that someone whose first response to a question
on why something doesn't work is 'turn it off' would not get a job here.
Neither would a sysadmin with as much

Minimal installation How-to?
Hi all
I would like to install the minimal level of Centos, with yum & selinux
on my servers during the basic install from CD with Anaconda and then
use yum to install whatever application is major on that server, so that
yum installs its dependencies only, thus keeping to the target of
installing only what is needed on a server.
Please advise pros/cons of this approach and how to do it. I

upgrade problem
Currently we have RH7.3 with compiler gcc 2.96.x
My mission, should I choose to accept it, involves moving
our embedded application to CentOS 4.1 with gcc 3.x
Problem is that about 1/2 million lines of code that gcc 2.96
accepts gives fatal fits to the gcc 3.x compiler from CentOS 4.1
I don't know how many fatal fits, as some disguise others etc.

why was LILO removed from centOS 4.2?
I can't choose LILO as boot loader anymore in the install process? And what is the
advantages in GRUP vs. LILO that are so great that LILO has been deleted all
together?
One big disadvantages when forced to use GRUB is that it is a hassle to make the
disks in a RAID1 bootable.

and RAID1 seems pretty useless when it is the

always wisest not to use that power except when absolutely necessary and
I'm quite certain that it hadn't reached that state.

mkfs.ext3 on a 9TB volume
Hello,
I have:
CentOS4.1 x86_64
directly-attached Infortrend 9TB array QLogic HBA seen as sdb
GPT label created in parted
I want one single 9TB ext3 partition.
I am experiencing crazy behavior from mke2fs / mkfs.ext3 (tried both).
If I create partitions in parted up to approx 4,100,000 MB in parted,
mkfs.ext3 works great. It lists the right number of blocks and creates
a filesystem that fills

Reducing the deleterious effects ofego related issues on the list
Bryan... NOBODY CARES how many times Chris is wrong.
NOBODY CARES what you prove on this point.
Whether Chris is right, wrong or stoopid is NOT proper fodder for this (CENTOS) list.
Chris being wrong is *strictly* a "Bryan Fixation".
Part of YOU growing up is YOU realizing that whether Chris is or is not
wrong is UNIMPORTANT to ANYTHING that you or anybody important
to you think is

Update or not?
After reading all the problems with the x86-64 update, I'm in a quandry
as to update this machine or not. Nothing that I am aware of is broken,
and at least everything I use works. This is NOT a production machine,
but it does have some important software that needs to run twice daily,
and I sure don't want to break things for that. If upgrade is not
necessary, how do I go about

Where to look or command
List,
I've got a process(s) that have been exiting on a signal 11, but not
all the time. I suspect it's memory related, and I was wondering, is
there any way to tell exactly how much memory a particular process has
in use at the point it sigsev's ? I can't sit here and watch top or the
system monitor, but thought maybe something might be saved somewhere
after the fact.

way to keep program in memory
Is there a way to specify that program X should be kep in memory and not
swap it out?
I have a program that takes some time to load and as long as you keep
using it its responsive
but if after sometime its not in use and now I use it it has a slow
response till it gets swapped back in.
The box in question has 1 GIG ram and its not running much else just
this program really. Just looking

[Fwd: [suse-amd64] OFF-TOPIC - *very* bad]
I saw this on the SuSE AMD64 list & decided to pass it along, since it
seems like a sneaky problem. Later posts confirm it is *NOT*
AMD64-specific, nor SuSE 9.3 specific ....

Re: New Standard/Daylight time-change dates in rhel4u2 butnot centos4.2?
The laws already exist:
Disturbing the peace,
Misappropriation of public funds,
Prohibition on unfunded mandates.
What's lacking is prosecutors, judges, and juries who
see the politicians as getting in the way of the
statesmen and the people.
To drag this back towards On Topic, it seems to me
that the ntp folks might be petitioned to write up and
submit to the Congress, a paper

server exercising, stressing, and/or testing
greetings
would someone please point me to an excellent server exercising, stressing,
and/or testing program that will run on centos 4?
i want one that will not out and out destroy a machine so to speak...
...meaning testing is one thing, yet pounding a box in the hard drive
department over and above the cause or unnecessarily does not appeal to me.
fyi the box i want to test/stress this time
