upgrade problem
Currently we have RH7.3 with compiler gcc 2.96.x My mission, should I choose to accept it, involves moving our embedded application to CentOS 4.1 with gcc 3.x Problem is that about 1/2 million lines of code that gcc 2.96 accepts gives fatal fits to the gcc 3.x compiler from CentOS 4.1 I don't know how many fatal fits, as some disguise others etc. "Can't find register to

[OT][Practices] The Case for RBAC/MAC
1: e-mail is a people skill, you affect people with it. The value of your presentation rises or falls with your skill at presentation. 2: My embedded headless linux targets live in isolated networks, even relative to other computer or network equipment at the target site. At times, the nearest land is 2 miles straight down (ocean floor). 3: These targets are also without

Reducing the deleterious effects ofego related issues on the list
Bryan... NOBODY CARES how many times Chris is wrong. NOBODY CARES what you prove on this point. Whether Chris is right, wrong or stoopid is NOT proper fodder for this (CENTOS) list. Chris being wrong is *strictly* a "Bryan Fixation". Part of YOU growing up is YOU realizing that whether Chris is or is not wrong is UNIMPORTANT to ANYTHING that you or anybody important to you think is

list of kernel patches --- where?
Traditionally, I've needed to compile my own kernel for my embedded headless systems. Traditionally, I've been on RH7.3; kernel source came with the distro. Now I'm looking at Centos 4.2 as my base, and two question arise 1: Where is the kernel source (I can hunt it down again, just wanting to know if anybody has a link to it they can paste please) 2: What are the patches applied to

selinux stuff - I just don't get -- "outgoing firewallsare broken"
> How's forever work for you? ;-> Absolutely FINE thank you! When your WizWonder package is housebroken, let me try it if I'm interested. Until then, a (stubbornly) broken distro will persuade me to try something else. That's why I left Windows, I guess, if you prognosticate correctly, it will be why I leave RedHat/CentOS. btw this has nothing to do with Firewalls at

Re: New Standard/Daylight time-change dates in rhel4u2 butnot centos4.2?
The laws already exist: Disturbing the peace, Misappropriation of public funds, Prohibition on unfunded mandates. What's lacking is prosecutors, judges, and juries who see the politicians as getting in the way of the statesmen and the people. To drag this back towards On Topic, it seems to me that the ntp folks might be petitioned to write up and submit to the Congress, a paper

More than 1 gcc version?
Hi CentOS4.2 - Is it possible to have an older version of gcc as well as the one that ships with this OS? I need to compile aspseek to run on this distro but it seems to only like older gcc's any ideas?

SELinux threads, cynicism, one-upmanship, etc.
After reading through the various SELinux threads, I really became quite perturbed. I mean, really quite perturbed. As an IT Director (and the entire IT department, currently), if I were hiring a sysadmin I know for a fact that someone whose first response to a question on why something doesn't work is 'turn it off' would not get a job here. Neither would a sysadmin with as much

Minimal installation How-to?
Hi all I would like to install the minimal level of Centos, with yum & selinux on my servers during the basic install from CD with Anaconda and then use yum to install whatever application is major on that server, so that yum installs its dependencies only, thus keeping to the target of installing only what is needed on a server. Please advise pros/cons of this approach and how to do it. I

Re: [Cantos] Boot process slow with RGB quiet on
"microcode device doesn't exist?"
Try grepping for 'microcode' in /var/log/messages, try dmesg | grep microcode, either or both may give you the exact text. chkconfig --list | grep microcode may also give you a hit, if yes, the problem is easy to cure: turn off the service (man chkconfig). If these don't give hits, then it's time to build a kernel for

why was LILO removed from centOS 4.2?
I can't choose LILO as boot loader anymore in the install process? And what is the advantages in GRUP vs. LILO that are so great that LILO has been deleted all together? One big disadvantages when forced to use GRUB is that it is a hassle to make the disks in a RAID1 bootable. https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2005-March/msg05935.html and RAID1 seems pretty useless when it is the

Hello, I have: CentOS4.1 x86_64 directly-attached Infortrend 9TB array QLogic HBA seen as sdb GPT label created in parted I want one single 9TB ext3 partition. I am experiencing crazy behavior from mke2fs / mkfs.ext3 (tried both). If I create partitions in parted up to approx 4,100,000 MB in parted, mkfs.ext3 works great. It lists the right number of blocks and creates a filesystem that fills
