which PID should be written to utmp/wtmp file
Hi,
For each user connection when privilege separation is enabled, 3 processes
are of interest for this topic.
1. sshd:[priv] - privileged user process.
2. sshd:user at pts/0 - user process.
3. shell - shell process.
Openssh code writes the #2. sshd:user at pts/0 - user process to the utmp/wtmp
file. Is this the correct behaviour.? Or should it write the #3. shell

Hi Group,
Here is some data.

too many close calls for non-opened fds
Hello All,
I'm using OpenSSH 4.3p2 in HP-UX 11.23. On running tusc (a tool to trace
system calls and signals) on sshd, I found lot of close calls upto 2047.
Those close calls try to close a non-opened file descriptor and results in
an error. This behaviour is seen only from OpenSSH 3.9 where closefrom()
call is introduced to close the file descriptors before re-exec. The fix is
to check

[Bug 980] sshd does not write the session leader pid to utmp when priv-separation is enabled
http://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=980
------- Additional Comments From senthilkumar_sen at hotpop.com 2005-04-29 00:28 -------
I tried passing SIGTERM to the sshd user process after applying the patch
(id=821) and it is not cleaning up the wtmp entries. What would be needed in the
patch additionaly so that proper pid is passed at the time of cleaning wtmp
entries when SIGTERM is

Simple Umacs example help..
Hello all...
I am just starting to teach myself Bayesian methods, and am
interested in learning how to use UMacs. I've read the
documentation, but the single example is a bit over my head at the
level I am at right now. I was wondering if anyone has any simple
examples they'd like to share. I've successfully done a couple of
simple gibbs examples, but have had a hard time

Tap'Touche 5 : keyboard issue
Hi,
I'm using Kubuntu 'Jaunty' and wine-1.0.1 (.deb package provided by Kubuntu).
I would like to learn how to type quickly on a keybord thanks to "Tap'Touche" (a French typewriting software) but it claims that some keys on the keybord are unavailable and so I could not do some exercices.
The following lines appeared (duplicated lines removed) :

SSH and forced wtmp entries ...
Hi all!
wtmp entries are generated when loggin into a system without a command,
e.g. "ssh -l user system". When using an additional command executed by
ssh on the "other side", no wtmp entry will be generated. So the command
"ssh -l user system /bin/csh" will not generate a wtmp entry but the
user is logged in ... I have the problem right know. The users are starting

Denial of service.
There are conflicting reports about wether or not Red Hat 4.0 is
vulnerable to the login-lockout described earlier. I have the
impression that if you install the updates it will have been fixed.
Approval of messages about this subject is now restricted to
"here is a patch", and a vendors "We have made a patch available".

anomalous wtmp logging bug
I've noticed rather strange wtmp logging behavior in sshd. Can anyone
confirm or solve the following:
Once a user authenticates themself to sshd, sshd among other things
records the login in the wtmp, which `last` reads. However, sshd logs
hostnames which are longer than 16 characters instead of IPs like normal
programs would. As a result, I have useless entries such as:

denial of service attack on login
Hi,
I''ve been writing a login application to utilize the features of both PAM
and libpwdb. Not surprisingly, this has meant looking at some old code..
The following denial of service attack seems to work quite nicely on my
ancient Red Hat 3.0.3 system with the standard login application. Perhaps
this is not a problem with 4.0? Does anyone know about other distributions?

wtmp repair - painless
hi,
from reiserfs it`s known to happen quite often - wtmp may be corrupted;
but actually I`m using only ext2/3 on the test machine.
After 7 days running the RH8 system I`ve noticed the first corruption of wtmp.
last shows only the line
wtmp begins Wed Dec 11 09:14:52 2002
and
/usr/sbin/dump-utmp wtmp
spits out the history,
e.g. the last line

openssh-3.6.1p2 server did not accept user connection.
Hi,
Whenever i boot the machine, the sshd started using rc script is not
accepting ssh connection from a normal user. However it connects as root
user and also connects as a user when the sshd is restarted. The error
message is
"fatal: PAM session setup failed[6]: Permission denied"
What would be the reason for this behaviour ?
I am using Linux-2.6.5-1.358 (Fedora Core release 2) and

(p/(pi*u))*(1+(x^2/u))^(p+1)
}
and would like to fit this one to my obeservational data (count)

logging in
This is.... odd.
We're seeing a *lot* of
sshd[8400]: Timeout, client not responding.
So I'm trying to find out whose client is having issues. Trying to figure
that, after processes are gone, I tried looking in lastlog, which is where
it gets odd. lastlog shows root coming in, and it shows a security account
coming in... years ago.
I see one of our users logging in a goodly number of
