Is this sample size big enough to test for statistical significance?
Dear R community, Is this sample size large enough to study differences between two groups of the populations? Q1: do the body temperatures differ between the two groups of the overwintering turtles juveniles and adults? One group (adults) has 6 turtles Second group (juveniles) has 1 turtle. There are 3 replications, i.e. the experiment was repeated over the three years, but using

Tukey, planned contrasts or t-test without ANOVA? What is correct?
Dear R community, I compare mean monthly body temperature between two age classes of turtles overwintering underground. lm(body_tem ~ Month*Year*Age_Class) TukeyHSD(aov(body_tem ~ Month*Year*Age_Class, a)) The Tukey HSD as well as the planned contrasts method showed significant differences between the two age classes, but insignificant differences between the two age classes at the same

Difficulties with R.oo (static fields, etc.)
I would like to use R.oo and tcltk to implement a Turtle World. I have encountered many problems because: 1) I am not sure how to implement static fields with R.oo 2) I am not sure how to implement a constructor that would call a function only for the first instance of a class (i.e., to initialize value of static fields only once) 3) I am not sure how to remove/delete cleanly existing

Turtle world
Dear all, I am trying to do a "loose" implementation in R of the Turtle World (LOGO) and need some advices on graphical issues. In its current very simple implementation, the user can give order to the the turtle to move through the console. The current position and movements are displayed graphically (see below). In the future, I would like to permit the turtle to interact with

row.names in dunes and dunes.env?
Hello, I've got a small dataset on box turtle shell measurements that I would like to perform a detrended correspondence analysis on. I thought that it would be interesting to examine the morphometrics for each species in the area of overlap and in areas where neither species occurs.  I've taken a look at the dune and dune.env datasets in vegan. Using the str() command gives me  >

"Turtle world" graphics in R
I would greatly appreciate some idea about the best approach to make a graphical interface of for a turtle world in R. In the turtle environment, the user controls movements of a turtle through the command line (e.g. forward(10), turn(5), etc.). The turtle should be displayed in the new position and heading after each command. Also, the turtle's path and, possibly, objects (squares,

Predicted values when using offset in ZIP GLM
Hi all! I have built a model to predict interactions with turtles and the model includes an offset for effort: ZIP<-zeroinfl(Sturgeon~fMesh+fSeason+offset(LogEffort),dist="poisson",link="logit",data=data) I wasn't clear about one aspect of the response to a similar question I recently posted...I apply the predicted model to a new dataset of standard conditions and

compare observed and fitted GAM values
Hi, I am comparing the observed and fitted values of my GAM model, which includes the explanatory variables: longitude, depth, ssh, year and month. When I compare observed and fitted values for longitude, depth and ssh it works. But when I try to do it for month and year (which are as factors in the GAM model) it doesn't work. My observed and fitted values are exactly the same.. How is that

Automate a data load and merge
Hi R list, I would like to automate, or speed up the process from which I take several separate datasets, stored in .csv formate, import and merge them by a common variable. So far I have greatly sped up the loading process but cannot think of a way to automate the merger of all datasets into a common data.frame. My apologies if this has been covered, any R search suggestions are

CPU-Capabilties for Nested Virtualization
Hi, I have some questions about the CPU-Capabilities for Virtualization especially for Nested Virtualization like the Turtles Project. I am trying to create a Nested Environment by following the instruction of: http://kashyapc.wordpress.com/2012/01/18/nested-virtualization-with-kvm-and-amd/ The bare-metal system is a Dell Server with following CPU-Flags (virsh capabilities) <cpu>

[ANNOUNCE] xlogo 1.0.5
The xlogo program simply draws the X Window System logo, without the use of any turtles. This release fixes a bug in which you had to hit "q" then "Escape" to exit, and collects several years worth of janitorial maintenance. Computational Ecologist Job at NOAA in Silver Spring, MD -- Marine Wildlife Spatial Modeling in R
The NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science is hiring a Computational Ecologist, a statistical/computational ecologist with experience fitting advanced spatial models to marine wildlife survey data (e.g., seabirds and marine mammal transects, fisheries trawl surveys) in R and other statistical languages. This is a full-time, long-term stable contract position. We are looking for an

read.table() with quoted integers
Hi! It seems that read.table() in R 3.0.1 (Linux 64-bit) does not consider quoted integers as an acceptable value for columns for which colClasses="integer". But when colClasses is omitted, these columns are read as integer anyway. For example, let's consider a file named file.dat, containing: "1" "2" > read.table("file.dat",

tkcanvas/bitmap for Turtle World
To represent a turtle inside a canvas (tcltk package), I have a serie of bitmaps representing the turtle heading in different directions and I would like to display the one that corresponds to the current direction of the turtle (function below). I have created with Paint a bitmap representing the turtle in BMP format and succeeded displaying it on canvas after converting it into XBM format
