Packaging under Win32 / cygwin : ZoneAlarm conflict [solved]
just for the record... recently I have had quite some problems with package building under Win XP. After some searching I found out that it was nothing R was to be blamed for but rather my firewall, i.e.; ZoneAlarm. As it seems, this problem has gone unnoticed so far --- I only found Marc Schwartz's posting http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/devel/03b/0246.html in the R-lists-archives. In my case it was not only performance, but there seemes to be a serious leakage phenomenon between cygwin's...

Application Blocking
On my windows machine I use a software fire will called ZoneAlarm. One feature I like Is the ability to block applications from using the net. I''ve looked with Shorewall and wonder if it does, or was ever meant to. Not a complaint, a curiosity. Kev -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... attention to those running ZONEALARM on windows and using samba
...g through the problems that i faced in trying to get my win2k machine to see the samba shares on my linux box. basically, i had set up samba correctly and was able to see my linux box on window's network neighborhood. however, i could not see (nor access) the samba shares. for those using ZONEALARM on windows, i made a critical discovery. in order to see and access the samba shares, you need to do the following: 1. open zonealarm 2. click on the "security" tab/button 3. click on the "advanced" rounded-button 4. click on the "add >>" button and sel...

httpd: "internal dummy connection"
On my Centos 2.5 web server, in /var/log/httpd/access_log, I saw several occurrences of: new.mydomain.net - - [11/Feb/2009:14:34:58 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 403 - "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) (internal dummy connection)" I have never seen anything like this before over many years of watching my logs. I presume it failed because my named virtual host

Firewall for virtual machines
...I generally have not used a firewall on the guest. This is partly because I only run it rarely, and it seems like a waste when it's running on a host that has its own, pretty effective firewall, but today I began to wonder - would it be a bad idea (or a complete waste) to use a firewall, like ZoneAlarm, on my Windows guest OS? Opinions welcome. Thanks. mhr

Help with "Updating Gem Source Index"
After hearing so much about RoR over the last few months, I finally decided to give it a try. I decided to follow the "Rolling with Ruby on Rails" article on ONLamp.com to get up and running. Unfortunately, since that fateful decision, I have run into nothing but obstacles. First, I downloaded and installed Ruby. That was my last success event. Then, I typed "gem install

RE: How to log and block specific application a ctivity
...9; Subject: RE: [Shorewall-users] How to log and block specific application a ctivity > I don''t think there is any way that the firewall can determine > what the client software is and block specific titles. Agree in principle, but will add a comment that this is what software like ZoneAlarm does when the firewall is running on an end-user''s Windows box. Maybe this is why the question was asked, and perhaps if the firewall is on the end-node itself the question is being asked whether there are more options akin to the EGID and EUID rules that can be written. Newbie - Adding a Samba system to a XP workgroup
...p which does not require passwords or excessive security. I would prefer to keep the workgroup because my wife uses one of the XP computers and would complain long and loud if now she needed to log on with a password. The computers sit behind a router and each XP machine has it's own firewall (ZoneAlarm)installed. Regarding this I have many questions, but initially I have only 4. 1. Is it possible for sharing within an XP workgroup from SAMBA to XP and vice versa. 2. If so how do I configure DNS - SMB.CONF for this configuration. ( I am REAL stupid, I don't even know how to name my Linux mac...

smbclient times out to 445 after upgrade to XP SP2
I think this is probably an XP SP2 issue but perhaps you've seen it before? We use smbclient 3.0.13 to download files from a machine "Testmachine" that used to run Windows 2000 and use the zonealarm firewall. A couple of days ago it was upgraded to XP SP2 (fully patched) using the built in Microsoft firewall. One folder "Example" was "shared" and the firewall was configured to allow a connection for "file and printer sharing" only for our download machine. Now w...

Shields-Up Scan of Shorewall Firewall
Guys, After i got the port forwarding and everything else working as per my previous post, i ran a shields-up scan from grc.com on the firewall, i.e. a scan of the external interface. I m a little suprised at the results. On the firewall i have postfix running ( smtp port 26 ), openssh ( ssh port 22) and port forwarding of port 85 (on the firewall ) to an internal host. The Shields-Up scan

BAD CLIENT, Invalid HTTP Format - Firefox, IE, etc..
...and return valid responses. So, the only problem I have is using a windows machine to access portions of the site. So far, I can consistently reproduce the problem in Firefox 1.0.7. I also can reproduce this in IE. One windows machine is a Parallels VM with a base, Win XP system. The other had Zonealarm firewall, but I have disabled that due to the thread that mentioned Mcafee security center. So, what are some ideas and is it possible that I am missing something critical that I have overlooked? Thanks for any help, Steve Spigarelli
